Hi,
I bought a couple of yellow-eyed combtooth blennies (Ecsenius Ops) on the suspicion they were a pair. I've had them for a couple months now and am pretty sure they are a male/female. I thought I'd note a couple of observations about the pair and ask if anyone has any similar experiences with spawning Ecsenius species.
Observations:
The larger one owns the big (highest) rock pile in the tank (a 5-foot 150) and does seem to get a little offended if the smaller one comes and pecks algae off this rock pile. The smaller one stays in "her" (I'll call it a "her") own "zone" and sometimes changes color - she turns quite white, especially below her lateral line. Sometimes she seems to have a bulging stomach.
The two fish do spend much of their time together, sitting on the same rock (as long as the rock isn't in the bigger one's territory) and posturing and following each other. In terms of nipping, I'd say it's a heck of a lot less than I see between my perculas.
Anyone know what I should be looking for in terms of spawning behavior? Is the color-change in the small one (which is temporary; if I walk over to the tank she immediately changes back to brown) normal or indicative of spawning?
