Blue carpets

Gig 'em

New member
Austin Aqua farms has posted some beautiful blue carpet specimens today for sale. Has anyone ordered any? I'm thinking of adding one to my display. They aren't posted on his site yet, but I got an email about them. Here are some pics. I think they look pretty healthy, any comments?

Unless they just came out of the bag, I wouldn't give them more than a couple weeks before they melt. Nice color, but that often is the case when the tentacles are that contracted.

Why would they send a pic of an upside down anemone if they are trying to sell it?

I believe he took the pictures right after getting the shipment in. I have ordered one, but won't be able to pick it up until the 27th so would that give ample time for the anemone to either regain health or croak?

For being "just out of the bag" they don't look that bad, but if they are really healthy they should bounce back quickly.

The big problem with giganteas is they are horrible shippers. Many melt within days of being received. Even those that look good after a couple weeks will often start the deflating/inflating "death dance" after a month or so. The couple giganteas I have had long term have never deflated. If you are thinking of buying a gigantea it is best to observe it for a couple days at least. If it is ever deflated during that time it is best to leave it in the dealers tank.

Here are a few pictures I asked him to send me. He said he shot these a couple minutes after the lights came on. Is the open mouth typical for newly acclimating carpets?

I think so... I saw a picture of a carpet anemone for sale on a different website, and it's mouth was similar...

Phender is correct, you should give them awhile before you buy them, if at all. The mouths on those look bad, most likely won't survive. IMO
