Blue face Angel

How "Reef Safe" is a blueface angel? My LFS got one in yesterday and I am looking for one last fish (show piece) I have a few zoas, a couple leathers, a few SPS's frags and a bubble coral. I am worried it will start picking. I know this type of question is a hit or miss w/ the animals.
Please could you post pictures if you have one in your tank. I would love to see them

I don't have a picture for you. I was very close to getting on of these fish a couple of weeks ago. I am holding out for an Imperator. From what I have heard your zoos and bubble coral are at most risk. While not completely safe the SPS should be ok and your leathers should be also provided they are of the more noxious variety( Sarcophyton, Sinularia, etc...).

I'd a juvie BF in a 75g for closed to a year and it didn't touch any corals. Unfortunately it died after a tank crash due to moving. I got a new juvie BF along with a pair of Semilarvatus...well you know what happens after butterfly goes in so I can't tell you if the 2nd one would nip. I think you'll have better success if you get them young and keep it well fed.

Here are a couple of pictures.

Gorgeous BF flameangel88! How did it get along with the juvi emperor?

lilchris, is this angel going in your 90g? Because it will out grow that in no time. Like you said, every fish is different. Usually SPS are ok, zoas are mostlikely toast tho.

Yeah I know that the 90 will be to small for it in no time. That is one of the reasons I did not pick up yesterday. But, it is just calling me, like a drug. He is about 5" but he has completely turned w/ his adult colors. I have a pico tank that I am going to start and I am planning on putting the zoos in that tank.

Thanks. The BF (about 1/4" bigger then the Emp at intro) was introduced a month after the Emperor and for sure I thought it was going to get ripped apart and I'll have to remove one but they got along fine. I've never seen them picked at each other and they take turn eating nori and clam on half-shell. When they swim right next to each other they will not avoid the other's path and just swim past but you can definately tell they know each other's presence. I think having them introduced close to the same time and having enough rockworks enhences your chances and luck will help.

I've a short video in my web page under 'My Profile' if you're interested in seeing their interaction.

Any large angel will eventually demolish your coral. I had my emperor, blueface, and french angel in my reef for a year with no issues. Once the emperor and blueface reached 6" they tore into the coral.

Now, anything that is dropped in the tank is fair game. When the large angels get large they become like cows. They constantly graze on things.

Enjoy them while they last, cause the coral will not survive long term with these pigs of the sea.

Mine ( still a juvi ) can NOT be trusted with any Zoas, so far SPS are fine. And if it wasn't for my clarkii pair he would be going after my Haddoni.

But, I still love the little guy.

Same with my group of angels. They were good initially but now they are chowing down on the LPS in my tank. My top offenders in my tank are my goldflake and Chrysurus, who i have caught several times nipping at my frogspawn and torch corals. I am going to try some SPS frags ad see if they attack those.

Forget the blue face. Mine was small just a couple of years ago and very mild mannered. Now he is 12" long and is a terror to the point that I will soon be selling him.

I have gotten him out of my system, until I go back to the LFS and see him again. But i will not get him. He would swarm over my other fish. The biggest is a Lyrentail Anthia which is about 4 to 5 inches tops. SO, I think he will be to aggressive for them. No far to them. Instead I am looking for another wrasse, a solar wrasse maybe.

But please keep posting pictures if you have them. No need to close this thread out. Please continue w/ the experiences.

Here's the best pic of my guy. So far SPS and anemone safe. 4" long. Hard to tell exact what he's been eating as that puffer eat anything, even xenia , but definitely been picking at my open brain and eat some polyps.
