Blue Hawkins help please

Bought a Blue Hawkins about 4 days ago and last night it started to slough off its skin. What can I do to save it, if anything.

It could be tough to reverse the curse. Hawkins can be very temperamental. I picked up a frag locally, floated it in my brother's tank for a number of hours before heading back to mine to acclimate. I look at it and notice a dirty bag and a mostly white skeleton. My bros tank runs on the warmer side of things, but it was kind of silly to see that.

Did you dip upon reception? If so, in what and how long? I know some skip dipping the Hawkins due to its apparent delicacy.

I'm 0 for 2 with Hawkins. The frst one RTN'd after dipping. I didn't dip the second one and it appeared fine for about two weeks and then I came home from work one day to a white skeleton. I think they are very temperature sensistive and a change in either direction of more than a degree or two can cause death.

This is most likely my problem then, along with the fact that I dipped it in revive for 5 minutes(normal concentration).

I'm on my second Hawkins. The first one RTN'd within 2 days kept midway up in the tank. The second one has been with me for over a year and a half and has tripled in size from when I got it as a frag. IMO this is a lower light SPS. Mine sits under a separating tank brace between two 400 watt Radiums but is only 2 inches off the sand bed and my tank is 27 inches in water depth. It not only has kept its' blue color but gotten even more intense, and readily extends its' polyps at lights out.

I know that some people have them in high light areas but this has proven to be the location in my tank where things work best for this coral.

I have had good luck with hawkins. I did not dip because I heard they can be sensitive to dipping. I keep it low in my 180 under 250 watt reeflux. Never moved it. It has tripled in size in the year that I have had it. The newer growth on it is blue and the older growth is more of a blueish green. I thought of moving higher to try to get it bluer, but with the way it is growing, I left it be. Mine is not too temp sensitive. My tank temp bounces around between 78-84 on hot summer days and in the cooler months from 77-81. Corals show no ill effects. I am thinking it is some other variable causing rtning. Possibly alk was way different than the tank it came from, or salinity, etc.
And in reference to the O.P., since it is a sensitive coral, once it starts sloughing tissue, it most likely will not survive

here is a pic. sorry for the angle. :-(

+1 for dip sensitive! I gave mine a freshwater dip... (didn't know that freshwater was bad! Now I do!) and it rtn'd completely within in an hour. Tried fragging... Didn't work out either...

Sorry for your loss! :(

I got a Hawking from Divers Den and actually got it 50% dead. Just left it alone in the tank, didnt frag, cut, or glue it and it came back and is growing like a weed. Honestly one of my fastest growers. Many people have issues with dipping it since its delicate as others have said. If it was me i would either leave it be or frag a branch and then let the rest settle in... or atleast try to.

Good luck :)

In my case and it looks like in lolgranny's too, my frag was shedding in the bag. Glad yours is doing well.

Never ever ever fresh water dip a coral it will kill it.

My Hawkins has been pretty hardy colored up nicely and even came back from a little bit of stn.

yea, im super bummed cuz ive taken the process of filling my tank very slowly. I only have three corals in there currently and one is not doing so hot(blue hawkins), the other was a test coral(super tiny yellowgreen sps), and the third isnt even an sps coral(hammer coral).

Where do you guys get your sps frags? I can't seem to get my lfs to get off their butts and order my coral. They keep giving me excuses, so Ive started looking online. So far, the best site i found for the corals I am semi interested in is battlecorals. But its like 300 bucks for a pack of like 7 things.

Also, how long do you wait before starting your calcium alk dosing. I havent started mine cuz both were in good levels. I am dosing fuel by aquavitro currently. I also dont have any fish in there yet. Was planning on buying 3 chromis and two clowns to start out with.

in my opinion, which is worth about a nickel, hawkins is something you add to your tank
last after you have proven everything else is doing well. lower light compared to other
acros. params simply have to stay stable for it to do well especially at the base. I would
never recommend this coral to others because it often ends in disappointment.

If you have only three corals in the tank, you wont need to dose for some time. Periodic water changes will carry you a long way.

Hawkings is definatly a lower light coral... I'v had mine for over a year now.. I'v noticed that once it is in an established spot, dont move it... Trying to blast it with more light isnt going to make it more bluer then it already is...
