Blue hippo unknown issue

Hey everyone.

I got a small hippo about a week ago, and it is in QT. it has been scratching so badly to the point where there is big chunks on both sides of it with no skin left. There is no signs of ich or velvet, and I just did a fw dip to check for flukes and I couldn't see any in the dish. I am stumped at what could be the issue. Any ideas would be appreciated!

Keep checking. Signs may pop up soon. Or it could be ammonia burning its gills. Did you check that?

Yes I've checked everything. Ammonia -0, nitrite 0, nitrate ~5 , phos .02 (Hanna ULR). I have started using paraguard by seachem and I'm waiting for some prazzipro to come in to start using that. I have been using garlic to keep its appetite up and the fish still seems to eat well. I am trying to get a picture but the fish hides as soon as I get close.

Just because the fish isn't showing white spots doesn't mean ich isn't present. Behavior such as flashing is usually the first sign of infection. I would start treating for ich ASAP - tank transfer method (TTM) is the recommended treatment.
