Blue Jaw in a 40b

A friends of mine bought a small 3" blue jaw trigger for his reef and its too small for his display right now so he's got it living in his sump for the moment. Would it be an issue adding this thing to my 40 breeder for a couple of months? I've got a few shrimp, bunch of hermits/snail, yasha goby, and mystery wrasse in my tank right now.

Another one of those cases someone didnt research before buying. Triggers need big tanks. 75 gallons or bigger. And triggers are best for fowlr tanks.

A couple of months won't kill the fish. Maybe get a huge tote at walmart for cheap. Cheers

Its not the problem of a few months....but where is it gonna go after those few months are done with. Are you gonna sell it? Rehome it? Setup a new system?

If I'm reading the original post correctly, it states the fish was purchased by his friend for a a display. There is no mention of how large this display is. The OP is asking if he could house the trigger in his 40B for a couple months until it grows out a bit to be placed in the friends display. I'll vote yes since the trigger is small and won't outgrow the 40 in a couple months. As mentioned, the shrimp may be at risk. I'd be curious as to what size tank the trigger will ultimately go home to.

+1 read peoples entire posts... More then likely his friend has a very large system with possibly aggressive fish that will harass a small trigger.

And agreed 2-4 months he'll be fine. Long term not way...

More then likely inverts might be goners. But it really depends.

My friend has a Marineland 300g and the fish is living in his sump right now. I've got a CB shrimp, cleaner shrimp, few small fish, and a bunch of critters. I know the trigger will ultimately make snacks of a few, but there are plenty of nooks and crannys in my rock work to provide shelter when "the big bad wolf" comes around.

Think its worth the risk? I've got a ton of flow and open swimming areas as well.

I think you can do it, I had a blue jaw that was very docile back in the day and bothered nothing even hermits and other inverts. Watch to make sure he isn't under stress in a smaller tank, but a 3in juvie should be fine in a 40 for a few months. Just keep getting rid of it when you see it getting too big in mind, and be prepared for it. You get my vote of approval.

I agree, and if he is well fed your inverts should be fine. People jump down your throat on here because they think they are right, some are. Most just don't read or assume your friend has a small tank

IMO go for it. Just don't be surprised if he eats every last invert.

Good luck

Hope for the best be prepared for the worst.

Couldn't have put it better, you really are rolling the dice. I had one like I said that never ate a single invert, but each individual when dealing with triggers is unpredictable.
