they tend to change shells when they see fit, or if their jerk neighbor has a nicer shell and they decide that they must have it :lolspin:. So scattering a handful of empty shells across the bottom is never a bad thing plus it could save your snails from being eaten if you have any. So long as you're feeding flakes/pellets/frozen and theres some getting to the bottom and into the rocks then there's plenty for them.
