Blue Line Angel

I recently purchased a blue line angel about 7 - 8 inchs the problem i got now it has not eaten anything in 12 days any one with any solution?

I'm struggling with that same problem myself. Day 5 with only one feeding and that was some fresh scallops he just attacked. Then ignored same when offered next day. Frustrating as pretty skinny to start with. Where did you get yours from?

That is a big issue with large angels that are not captive raised. I would assume that you bought the blueline from ReefHotSpot. The reason I didn't purchase the 6" they had available was due to the reality that they would more than likely die to starvation.

I would try throwing in some Chaeto and see if the angel eats that.

God luck

i got my at the LFS they had a few to pick from but i picked the bigger due to the other angels being large in my tank . i didn;'t want to have them fighting but i guess i made the wrong choice

I got mine around 5". It took only 3 days for it to eat. I think i lucked out though, my specimen was allegedly one that had been collected in large fish nets in Vietnam about 3 months ago. My LFS dealt directly with the collectors. Most of these specimens are collected with cyanide, and are slow to eat or will not eat at all. Also, the larger, more mature the fish is, the harder it is to make them adapt to captive life. Try clams on the half shell or fresh diced mussells with garlic extract. Good luck, they are a beautiful fish once adapted.

I tried live clams tonight with no luck. I have fresh ulva (sea luttuce) that i grow and is live, no interest. Not the slightest bit interested in any form of pellets. Doesn't give PE mysis a second glance. The one success was with fresh scallops so i'll try that again tomorrow.

I would try putting in the Chaeto and let it float around the tank and the BLA might chomp on that.

I have also found that placing pellets on Live Rock entices the angels to graze as they do in the wild.

tylorarm- Have you treated your Blueline for Flukes? Often times the large angels come in with them, which may lead to several symptoms, including unwillingness to eat. Try Prazi-Pro. I have soaked a small amount in the frozen food for internal parasites and/or have dosed my tank to get rid of external body/gill flukes. It was really effective.

Did you dose your display, or quarantine?

I dosed my display, as I have a FOWLR presently. I actually used two Prazi treatments which lasted roughly 10 days, doing 20% water changes before and after treatment. Prazi is the only medication i would use in a display though. I set up a nice QT, so all new additions are treated in QT now.

And how did you dose it into the food?

yes diff. treat for flukes. you have to think what they eat in the wild. which is sponges. I tryed the premade sponge food he didnt eat it. then I put in a live rock with some sponges on it. and that worked.

As I do most of the time, I usually put my frozen food in a small bowl in the fridge prior to leaving for work. i dose with Selcon and 3-4 drops of Prazi, sometimes I add garlic. Eight hours later I feed the tank. Can I definitively say that the prazi in the food eliminated the internal parasites?; I can't really confirm it but some of the more finicky fish usually begin eating and fatten up for me in a 3-4 week time span. I have definitley seen the effects of Prazi working externally, especially when there were flukes on the specimen's eyes and fins. It usually works within a three to five day period.

the reason I ask is because I was interested in doing the same thing, but Jay Hemdal said that praziquantel is very water soluable, so it likely just "washes off". He also said it can be overdosed, so I have been quite weary to do so. i have some Junglke medicated pellets which have praziquantel in them, but the fish wont eat it (although they eat EVERYTHING else).

I had no luck with the pellets either. Apparently Seachem makes a product that helps bind medication and makes it more palatable, I think it is called Focus. I think Jay Hemdal was speaking on the more potent powder form of praziquantel, which is usually sold for use in large ponds. Prazi-Pro is not as concentrated as the praziquantel powder. I guess you may not want to use it simultaneously if also dosing the entire display. However i have done it without a fish loss, maybe i am just lucky.

I am most interested in P.O. application (ingested), so I may try the soaking food in it. Praziquantel is a fairly common wormer in the animal care world, so I would expect it to be available in many different dosages, FWIW.

I was planning to do 5 day prazi in QT but wanted to get him eating regularly first. I'll leave him in QT for a month at least anyway so i figured no hurry. However, maybe he's more likely to eat if i do prazi now?

Obviously i have to do full tank prazi treatment or intensive dip (apparently that's what Steinhart Aquarium does) as he's not eating regularly so medicating food not going to help.

piaa & tylorarm:

Any update?

I just got mine in this morning. It's 6" and fat (either this one just got in quick from the ocean or the stomach is infected).
