blue matrix ?

They were picked up on the same day in the same shipments the rumor has it.
back from the dead..
the rumor is false. the original one was picked up from an old store we had in san leandro on a bali aquaculture shipment..came in crap brown and eventually morphed into the solid blue color.
from the pics ive seen of rich's, i didnt htink they were the same coral in that his somehow grew fast and didnt have the same coloration. all the ones ive heard of from the original grew extremely slow.

I can't say with ANY sort of certainty WHAT so ever, but I picked this piece up wild from PAF in '05, I fragged it and sold half (lost the other half) when that tank crashed. I'm pretty sure this is the same as blue matrix, and I unfortunately don't recall who I sold it to, or what ever became of it.

i dont think thats the same coral..the one u have ive seen come out of fiji and was called an albrohensis. it tends to be a lighter shade of blue, like baby blue and sometimes morphs into a greenish body w/ lighter hair like polyps.

no, not an albrohensis, look at the difference in the terminal coralite growth.

I believe it's the same coral when looking at other blue matrix's. It was by far the most intense/vibrant blue/I've ever seen in a stag.

and here is a close up on the polyp structure. (this tank had some issues..sadly I lost what I kept of the piece/colour after I had fragged it..seriously who ever heard of a regal angel that snacked on SPS.)

when i say albrohensis, its just a generic term that was used for this particular coral back in the day even though in reality it probably doesnt even match what a albro really looks like in the books. ...thats the case for most of the coral name we throw out there misidentifying species hence the trend to give funky names these days.
..im just saying your piece looks very much like many of the pieces ive seen come in on fiji shipments in the early 200s u have a pic of the coral under different lighting conditions ? the matrix had more of a solid dark blue color and not the baby blue/sky blue color shown in ur pic.

uh, not to start a whole mess here. The reason we give coral funky names is a bunch of marketing bs to try to fleece people for more money. Not because we are to lazy to take the time to properly ID something.

yeah i think the special names are getting ridiculous especially when a coral has name that could make up a complete sentence. lol either way u look at it, we need some sort of way to reference these corals and that really depends on your preference in how u want to call these corals.

, back to topic.

u know..that looks very similar to it or is the same coral and thats not to say that today more of these corals are coming in bali shipments as my piece did come from a aquaculture. fact that its aquacultured im not surprised to see more of these coming in but id say realtively speaking they come in less than some of the dime a dozen corals u often see on shipments.
i believe robz also had a similar piece.

when i took a break about 5 years ago, i ended up ditching mine for whatever reason so i dont even have a piece to compare but i did manage to pickup something similar that came from indo.

Ah good, glad we can get back on topic. As far as what's been coming in on plugs can you post a pic? I've been down 104 a few times in the last a few months and while I have seen a lot of cool interesting stuff now coming in via plugs, I haven't seen anything like the images above (either mine or franklins).

how about this? sold as tyree blue matrix a few yrs ago. by a reputable reefer
on this board.

Looks just like my blue matrix, though mine has never had the polyp ext like yours in the second pic. Mine has more clear polyps with about half that ext. More than likely just differences in lighting and flow.

Nice.. picked up a frag from Your Reef a few months ago. Wondering for those of you who've had this coral for awhile. What's the best placement for color and growth. I have mine about 14" a little off center under 250 watt DE Ushio bulb and 2 MP10's on 100% reefcrest in a 45 gallon Tech tank. I'm getting decent polyp extension, but how do you get the color?
