Does blue light at night actually benefit the aquarium or is it strictly for us to view the tank with?

It's beneficial, there are some reef inhabitants that prefer that time of day for hunting/eating.

Well.. Ok.. Lets clarify..

In real life/in the ocean... yes the "moon" has been proven to serve a purpose/tell them when to spawn,etc..

But IMO that does NOT mean that if you stick a blue light in your tank at night that it provides the same benefit/functionality,etc....
Far too many tanks without them doing just fine and no guarantees at all that adding one will do anything else than many you the user "happy"..

So I would say without a doubt that NO it does not benefit the aquarium the way that the real moon benefits the ocean critters,etc...
Its far more just to make you happy...

If you leave them open all night, It can cause more harm than good. But leaving them for 1-2 hours after the main lights are off, it will give fish some time to find a place to sleep.

If they are really, and I mean REALLY dim moon lights (and most led fixtures moon lights are TOO bright) they do no harm. But they certainly don't do much if any good, sorry ladynavyvet.
