Blue Ribbon Eel, glass top, evaporation

After getting a beautiful blue ribbon eel (Yes, I know…..I did my homework, I read, and read, and read about it, but I could not resist my self getting it. After baby sitting it for 5 days finely it’s eating) but my problem if I have one is that I had to cover my tank with the glass top to prevent the escape of my new eel, so before in my 125 gals. I had to replace the evaporated water with at least 1.5 to 2 gals of kalwasser daily but now the water level is almost the same due to the poor evaporation. What should I do now to keep my Calcium levels if I won’t be adding that much kalwasser? My corals are going to suffer because of this. Please help.

You could replace the glass with the largest knit screen and frame it in with wood and use staples to hoold the screen in place.
You will get evaporation and the eel wont escape.

na i wouldnt use egg crate. we had one that was 3 feet long get through the eggcrate at work.

screen top or simply put a clip on fan on the sump, that will kick up the evaporation

Yup- they will slip right through eggcrate. A fan on the sump; replace a couple small sections of the glass with fine mesh; hook up a Kalk Drip bag (think IV bag) rather than the reactor if you want to dose faster than youre evaporating. Calcium reactor would be the most efficient option, but the most expensive.

Use tight screen or fan your sump. I had a 3 foot BR eel pop an acrylic lid off that was perfectly cut for the tank. I had close pins on the top rim as extra protection, but that wasnt enough. When I got home, 2 close pins that were on the corner of the lid were popped off on the floor, the corner of the lid was slightly open and the eel was 15 ft away in my kitchen. He was so dried up that I figured he was dead but to my surprise he lived for another 3 days. Definately use a nice lid though....they are AWESOME eels!

For some reason I was thinking this was a full-grown eel. Is there a blushing smiley? :)

Even full grown ribbon eels are rediculously thin and squishy.

Looking forward to some pics! :D

Thanks a lot guys, this was my first time trying to get help and I'm very happy to feel that I’m not alone (I hope you guys understand Thanks again). what I did was to place the egg crate leaving the small portion of the glass top on the back, evaporation went back to normal, I'm dripping kalkwasser again at the same rate and, my water levels are perfect. I just noticed some red stuff growing in my sump as well as in some rocks in the tank, I'm against of the use of any chemicals. There is any way to control the growth of this. I'm including some pics.

Very cool!....but that cleaner wrasse will soon be eel food, they are expert fish eaters.

beatiful eel, I've been thinking of getting one myself but I hear they have a 90% mortality rate which makes me think maybe I should give it a shot. Noticed you had a copper banded butterfly in there though, no problem with it picking at corals, specifically soft corals?

My LFS has had 2 for about 2 weeks and this is with a total die off of all the clowns in the 250gal tank they keep them in a "bug" container and today they had a clown trigger about 3 inches in the container with one of them ????

The first two days I tried frozen krill but it didn’t liked. Then I changed to a mix of shrimp and clams that I got from the supermarket, but what I believe triggered the appetite was the silversides. I feed it at the end of the day turning the metal HQ off and leaving the actinic on. In relation to my copper banded butterfly, I’m lucky because is not touching my soft corals but I can not have any feather dusters, he just loves them.
