Blue Ring Octo

Seems MS got a Blue Ring in their last shipment. I was there today to look around and get some rubble. They have it in a container in one of the small tanks in the middle section. Scary stuff. So who is gonna buy it? lol

What to do if you get bit!

The bite of the blue-ringed octopus may be painless but it is definetly deadly. Its venom contains some maculotoxin which is more violent than any animals found on land. This poisen is 10,000 times more potent that cyanide. Upon being bitten, the victom's nerve conduction is stopped and paralysis sets in after a few minutes. Paralysis is then followed by death. Some symtoms are as follows:

*Nausea

*Blindness

*Loss of all other senses

If you do see someone get bit you should immediatly call 911, and then apply compresion to the wound as if it was a snake bite. Artificial respiration should also be started as soon as possible. The only way to survive is hours of heart massage and artificial respiration until the poisin has worked its way out of the system. There is no anit-venom to date.

Quick Facts

The blue rings are only visible when the Blue-ringed octopus is about to atack
It has a tiny, parrot like, beak that can bite through your wetsuit
The Blue-ringed octopus is only the size of a golf ball but still carries enough poisin to kill 26 humans in minutes
The poisin is not injected but comes from it's saliva
They are found in shallow coral and rock pools in Australia

The Blue Ring Octo comes with the container it is in. Heck, they even have a rock sitting on the lid to keep it from getting out. I am probably wrong, but I think it is only $59.99, which is pretty cheap for something that can kill ya! If the rumor of death by Blue Ring is true.

Some of the quick facts are wrong but close enough.

Their venom is an epoxy !
It has to mix the two parts together before it becomes lethal.

They must have some liability insurance plan.

I talked to the kid there. They said they did not order it. It was a sub for something else. He also said the bag it came it was not labeled. The only way they new it was in there is because it was on the invoice. I can't believe a supplier would send that as a sub and unlabeled. That is a big accident waiting to happen. Was neat looking. I think it was like 70 bucks.

seems like the more lethal things are the cheaper they are

you can buy a 1.1 pair of gaboon vipers for less than $300

It is $60 and if the rings are only visable when it is going to bit then it is ****ed :-) because it was just sitting there blue rings and all.

My question is who has been putting in the crabs and shrimp it has been eating :D

Personally I think it would rock to buy but I would need to mod my tank so it wouldn't get out and then I'd have to find a fish store around here willing to sell crabs/shrimp for less then $8

I think it is important to note: "a 70 lbs Octo. can fit through a 2" hole" which means you could devise some fun games for it to fiure out during feeding time.

I don't mind getting bitten by a clown or smacked by a mantis. Ain't no way I am gonna put somethign in my tank that will take me down faster than I can call 911 lol. I will stick with my snails.

At least with my lion and my foxfaces I can make it to the bathroom to run my hand under scalding water.
