Blue Spot Jawfish

I recently purchased a Blue spot. He is/was awsome. For the first several weeks he was digging and hanging around different spots. Now he is gone, I can't find him, I have a 120gal Tank, I guess he has lots of places to hide but its unusual that he was there and now gone. Anyone have similar experience?

I have a glass top, I have checked the sump and have not found him. It's a 110gallon tub so he may be hiding in there somewhere

tough fish to keep. They are expensive fish and many times end up with infections. Try some frozen brine as all jawfish I have had really like brine shrimp.

try your overflow. I have had my bsj's in there over 20 times. If you don't see them for 2 days, they are prob not in the display tank or dead.

Thanks Prickles, I looked in both overflows but have not seen him. I fear he is gone. He was an awsome fish, more personality then any other

agree with kawaicivic. they aren't long term fish. i lost 2 due to infections. i wont ever get one again. if you want a jawfish, i believe the pearly jawfish have a better survival rate. but once again, you're going to need a screen top.

IDK.... does 3 years count as long term? That's how long my BSJF has been with me. Yellowheads are nice,but.... no comparison to the blue spots, IMO.

Yeah, i disagree about the longevity. Aside from getting sucked into the skimmer and a tank crash, I haven't had any deaths from BSJ's. You do need a COMPLETELY covered tank. Remember they aim for holes, it's not random jumping. Mine jump onto the eurobracing pretty regularly and then jump back in. If they could jump out, they would.

Hi I've had two of these and seen to be having a tough time keeping them alive. I know temp is important, basser1 said they have had there's for over three years. Do you have a chiller on your reef system and if so what temperature are you keeping it at, and how deep is your substrate bed? I have a 75 gal reef tank it was set up about four months ago, is ti too soon to be putting this type of fish in my reef?

Does anyone quarantine their BSJ's before placing into the display tank? If so, can they survive in a bare bottom tank with PVC pieces for 6 weeks? If they need the sand substrate to feel comfortable while in quarantine, could I put a bowl filled with sand into the QT?

Also, do they tolerate a fresh water bath prior to going into the QT?

for whats its worth this is my experience with this fish. I have seperate q/tanks for new fish and usually always go that route however i decided to put my blue spot into a established 30 gallon cube with mixed sand and coral rubble substrate after a fresh water dip of a few min. The only other fish in there are two bonded percs and a small flasher wrasse cuc some softies and leathers plus a variety of macro. I have a lot of live rock and the jaw fish dove straight into a cave and stayed out of sight for a day. Then it was sand storm every morning for a few days. The blue spot set up house under a rock at the back of the tank for about a week then went MIA and i thought a rock must have caved or ? After 2 days the little guy popped up with a new burrow in the front of the tank and is out and about most of the day. The tank is totally covered and so far so good. The only change is the moving of a tiny yellow watchman goby and p/shrimp to this tank from one of my others where a pseudo was causing issues. The goby has one side of the cube and the jaw fish has a burrow on the otherside. There has been no aggression issues from anyone. This is a very interactive personable fish once it has settled in and has its safe places to go to. So 1 month and counting for me, hope yours shows up.
