Blue-Spot Jawfish

hi MRP2G

Take a look at this entire thread. It discusses some of the successes and failures folks had w' Blue-spot Jawfish.

Some people believe that they shouldn't be kept in tropical conditions (in nature, they live at about 70-75F), and others hint of 'blue-spot jawfish disease' (characterized by bacterial infections, and sudden lost appetite). I believe that collecting practices determine the health of the Blue-spot in aquaria, but that's just my opinion.

I will continue to update folks on the health of this fish. It's been 5 months so far...

Also, I would not mix them with sea-horses. Blue-spots are not aggressive, but, when established, are very speedy and relentless eaters. I don't think sea-horses could keep up with them during feeding time...

Wow. I bought the fish since I loved the personality and the color. (ok I admit it, I didn't research this purchase). But on the positive side he is the sole inhabitant of his tank. I really hope that my husbandry skills are up to the task as I don't want to kill a wonderful fish.

I don't want to start a war, but... what temp is everyone keeping their tank at and how long have your fish been healthy?

hi Tim

Mine has been healthy for about 5 months. Nothing to celebrate, but a good sign.

My tank is generally at about 80 degrees, and I believe others had success keeping BSJF in tropical conditions.

Most important: provide your guy with a nice sandbed, and a firm lid on the tank. They are notorious jumpers, but seem more easily settled when given a nice deep sandbed (at least 4"-5").

Best of luck, and let us know how your sole inhabitant does in your tank.

Take care,

Flamehawk

Flame, I have to say that your fish appears very healthy.

There's a reefer somewhere that posted pics of his pair breeding - if you haven't seen that already you might want to search the archive for it. I can't remember who it was.

I wonder how his fish are doing.

The blue-spot jawfish is doing great- very feisty, strong-willed, and a good eater. It's been about 7-8 months since I got him on EBay.

At this point, I accept that some folks have problems caring for this fish, and others do not. While I can hypothosize on the reasons why, I can't do so with any authority.

Best of luck...

Here's a pic of Digger. I've had him for over 9 months now!

My blue spot actually had his entire tail bitten off. Not sure of the culprit, but guesses go to the watchman/pistol pair. He was very adventurous until then. He disappeared for a week, and then came out looking very pale and beat up. It's been a few months since that and he's perfectly fine. Still no tail, but the bone is no longer visible.

prickles...... Glad to hear your blue spot is doing well. My blue spots' tail will look kind of ragged from time to time. Don't know who or what the culprit(s) are, but it heals over quickly and he doesn't seem to bother him.

While I was on a biz trip, my Blue-spot went carpet-surfing & died...

My wife couldn't figure out how it got out... I had an eggcrate lid, but it wasn't enough.

May my Blue-spot Jawfish from eBay, 'Rodney', rest in peace...

Bummer.

I have read that they will find holes through an eggcrate lid and probably even get stuck on top if it is horizontal. I have a full hood on my tank and eggcrate over the back placed vertically. People have mentioned that they can target holes on the horizontal ones, and I hope they cannot see/hit the holes on the vertical one. I have successfully kept my jawfish in the tank (including the sump) for over a year with this setup.

This is off the subject but does anyone know how to tell the male from the female blue spot jawfish? I have one BSJ that I have had a couple of months and he looks great still. This fish has nice dark colors. Great personality. I have tried to look online for a way to sex these fish but so far I have come up with no info.
