Blue Spot Jawfish

I ordered a Blue Spot Jawfish from Divers Den about 2 months ago and unfortunately lost him a couple of days ago. I'm pretty devastated as he was my favorite fish- both beautiful and entertaining.

I would like to attempt a blue spot again, but I had a couple of questions about them that I'm hoping you can answer.

First of all, do you know how they are caught? I've read that some die after a short period in captivity due to methods used to capture them including pouring bleach into their burrows to drive them out. (I'm assuming from everything I've read about your company that you wouldn't support divers using collection practices like that, but I am interested in how they are collected.)

Secondly, are they ever found/sold in pairs? I've read that they will be hostile towards other blue spots in the same tank, but I was wondering if a male/female pair would have the same issue or if they are always solitary.

Normally, these fish are sold individually, however we would be happy to check with our Aquaculture Coral and Marine Life Facility to see if they are ever offered in a pair. We will repost as soon as we have further information.

In rereading my original message, I realized it may have come across that my jawfish died mysteriously and I was worried it was due to collection practices. I wanted to clarify that unfortunately, I know all too well how my beautiful fish died. He found a small gap in the cover on my tank that I was unaware of.

Anyway, I just wanted to clear that up so anyone else reading this wouldn't have unnecessary concerns about receiving an unhealthy fish that will mysteriously die from your company.

Yes, Michelle, they are VERY proficient jumpers, probably more so than any fish I have kept. You must have NO openings or they will get through. 1/4 inch holes are acceptable but 1/2 inch or larger is not likely to keep them in. Sorry for your loss!

I know. I have fairy wrasses too, and I actually have mesh screen over the only opening in my canopy. It apparently got a hole in it the last time the canopy was taken off and put back on, but since it is hidden by the lights, I couldn't see it.

I went overboard with the covering now. I took 1/2" eggcrate (couldn't find 1/4" at the store), cut it to size, and wrapped it in mesh screen. If anything gets out now, it will be the next Houdini!

Egg crate wrapped in mesh should work. As long as holes are 1/4 inche or less.

It's actually window screen, so I think anything larger than a copepod will be stuck in the tank now.
