Blue spotted jawfish companion?

I have the 28 gallon nanocube and a blue jawfish as my only fish and was looking for an idea on a good addition. My concern is I am still learning and I don't want to be a referee so whatever addition has to be peaceful. Maybe a firefish but he would end up annoying jawfish I think.
Also going on easy with no skimmer how many fish? I do 10% water changes but if power goes out for a few hours I don't want to be panicking. Thanks for all ideas and possible reasons why. Sps with frogspawn

If you want to provide the best possible environment for a blue spot Jawfish, I'd suggest not adding more fish. From my research they will benefit greatly by being in a tank by themselves. They do need a cooler temp. tank, mid-high 60s with a hefty layer of sand. At least 4", 6-9" being much more ideal. In the wild their caves to about 9" deep, which is why a deep sand bed is good.

I have had a blue spot jawfish for over 5 years now. They do burrow so having a deep sand bed is a good idea but if not (mine is only 3 inches at most) they will burrow under a live rock. I also supply him/her with a bunch of live rock rubble since they like to reinforce their caves and openings.

I have mine in a 90 gallon with hawkfish, anthia, clowns, six line, chromis. None bother him but if they get too close the jawfish will open it's mouth wide but nothing more than that. I used to have firefish in there and honestly, they will not do anything to your jawfish. In regards to how many fish in your 28? It depends on what you like. Definitely no tangs but a firefish and the jawfish would look nice. What about a clownfish?

Also, my tank is 80F and I have never had an issue. Perhaps it's when they are juveniles or fry when temp plays a role. I am just hypothesizing on the last. Just make sure you feed him meaty foods and have a lid. They are known to jump.

Yours may have been a fluke, I've heard of many Blue spots that aren't very long lived outside of a coldwater environment. That's why I've never picked one up... Which is sad because they are adorable fish.

here's a few very passive small fish to consider;
yellow assessors
blue assessors
royal gramma
rainfords goby (court jester)
tail-spot goby
If you go with cooler temps, Catalina and Zebra catalina gobies
possum wrasses
fang blennies, blacklined, canary, ect.

These are just some to look into. :)

Thank you!

Thank you!

Thank you for posting! Our jawfish was added this week and he is now our favorite fish! I've not read many posts that have longevity and this provides hope.

Just be a little leary about ground dwelling gobies, and blennies...

Ground dwelling gobies have a greater chance of encountering the jawfish, and have similar body shapes...

My starry blenny obliterated my jawfish as soon as the lights came on in the morning. He showed no aggression at all while in the acclimation box, but went absolutely mad as soon as he spotted it in the morning...
