keep it slow, you don't want to create a spike. If you think watching him landscape with snail shells is great, wait until he tries to put live snails and hermits around his door. They will keep running off and he will keep putting them back!
Once he has a home, he won't really come out unless it's dark or it's feeding time. He'll just poke about 2/3 of himself out for most of the day.
+1 million to that. However I think my BSJ is a bully. When I feed he will come halfway across my 6 foot tank to grab food. He has no problem leaving his cave for food, but retreats right afterwards. If I am not feeding he just sits there watching about halfway out as you said. How big is yours? Mine is about 4.5" and has been in the tank for amlost 2 years.
I think my BSJ has had a live snail in every picture I have ever taken. Keep giving him snail shells and live rock rubble, he will get to where he will build right in front of you when he gets comfortable.
