Blue Spotted Jawfish

So, my wife has been wanting me to get a Blue Spotted Jawfish for the tank. I have a matched pair of Ocellaris Clowns (pretty sure tank bred) and a Royal Gramma Basslet. Other fish I would like to add are ( and theses are not set in stone either) a Flame Angel, Flame Hawkfish and maybe a few Flasher Wrasses. I know I won't be able to add all of them, but it will be some combination of them. Anyone has experience with these? What ones get along, or don't get along.

Thanks,
Dan

They will do well with those except for maybe the Royal Gramma. I have had several over the years anad they do well in a big tank, however they are notorious for finding their way out of the tank and on to the floor. If you do not have a completely covered top then I would hesitate in getting one. Don't get me wrong, they are full of personality and are fun to watch...it just sucks to see it dried up on the carpet......

Def need a cover for the top of your tank if your debating a blue spotted jawfish i just use an Eggcrate set up over my tank for those dartfish/gobies that are known to be jumpers.

The bf and I have a bluespot in the main display tank. The coral beauty, 4 line wrasse, and blue damsel all play nice with him. It's actually funny to see the damsel steal rubble rock from the jawfish and deposit it halfway across the tank, and then watch the jawfish get up the courage to go out there and get this rock back. lol. The coral beauty angel would go and flash it's fins at the jawfish for the first few days until the jawfish got comfortable enough to defend his territory from the bigger fish. Since then, there's been no issues. The four line wrasse and the jawfish were added at the same time, and there hasn't been any issues at all between those two fish.

We had a starry blenny in the tank when we put this jawfish in, and they started to fight within minutes. Needless to say, the starry blenny was evicted to the LFS because I was not going to lose a $100 fish. So I'd be careful putting a jawfish in with fish that look similar to him or fall into the blenny/goby families.

When my bf's pair of clowns were in the main tank, we also had a blue spot jawfish. The clowns didn't bother the blue spot at all. Unfortunately, he jumped out of a tiny space between the glass tops and the back rim of the tank. So definitely make sure the top of your tank is "jumper-proof" before you'd get one. We definitely fixed the open space issue at the top of the tank before adding the jawfish or the wrasse, because we've had a six line wrasse jump out of that same space as the jawfish did.

Other than that, I'd definitely recommend getting one. They have such a great personality, and are one of those hidden treasures that people love to "discover" when they come over to see our tank. :)

I wish you the best of luck!!! That's where mine came from....we got it two weeks ago or so. Healthy as a horse. They really have nice quality fish. Never been disappointed with a fish I've ordered from DD. And the blue spot is by far my favorite. To help him settle in, pick a spot in your tank that you like for him to be, and put a bunch of rubble rock there. When you put him in the tank, put him right by that area. He'll more than likely go to that spot, especially if there's a bit of a cave or indentation for him to hide by. I did that when we got ours, and he's built himself a nice home right where we wanted him.:celeb1:

Did your blue spotted jawfish stay near the front of the tank? I would like to get one but I'm afriad it will decide to make its home in the back of the tank and we will never see it. They are too expensive to have it hide in the back all the time.

Well, he's on the way. Should be here tomorrow AM. I have the QT all set up. Even cleaned it out for him, and put fresh water in it. It's just a 10 gallon tank. I put 4 gallons of new water, and 6 gallons of water from my display tank (it was due for a water change anyway). I'll leave him in there for a few days anyway, then put him in the main. I have already decided that if the Basslet gives me any trouble he's going to get evicted to the QT. Then I'll decide where he's going from there. Thanks to everyone who replied here.

Well, he's in the main tank now. The Basslet isn't happy. There have been a few fights already, but nothing big. I'm going to try to re-arrange some rock work to see if I can make a separate cave for the Jawfish. I guess if that doesn't work then the Basslet will be looking for a new home after being relocated to the QT.
