Blue Tang With Ich

So I went to the basement to do my first transfer and couldn't find my Goby in the tank. At some point between late this afternoon and tonight he jumped out of the tank. Not sure how he got out as I made a custom cover thats pretty darn tight. So I transferred over the Tang and that went pretty smooth. I think the ammonia went too high and maybe he freaked out. I've got one of those ammonia badges on the tank and it was in the green. Anyways now down to the Tang which is where I should have been originally. I'm hoping he does OK with the TTM. I took a small tupperware container and drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom. Then lightly sanded the inside. That seemed to work pretty good with moving him over to the new tank. Tomorrow i'll clean up the old tank with some bleach and let it dry out. It kinda sucks about the Goby but i'll get another one when the time is right. Also wanted to see if its ok to use Prime with the TTM? I already put some in the new tank and hopefully that doesn't affect it.

Thanks again!!

I just added it to my first transfer. I can let you know tomorrow how my tang is doing. I'm a newbie but to me it makes sense since the ammonia can spike pretty fast with a non-cycled tank.

I'm going to start the TTM tomorrow morning as I read its better to start in the morning. I ordered an bottle of the Prazipro this morning and should have it by Friday. I can't seem to find it at any of the LFS.

This may be a stupid question but i'm assuming I should also treat the Goby with the TTM at the same time i'm treating the tang?? They are both in the same QT (which I'm now realizing wasn't smart).

Thanks again!!

I start in the afternoon as I change from 1 tank to the next at 71 hours and that means each change comes an hour earlier than the previous. You cannot let it go 72 hours before a transfer.

I keep an ammonia badge in the TTM tanks and only add if it creeps up. It very seldom, in my experience, ever gone up in the 72 hours.

Depending on the fish you have/feeding schedule that may not be the case as well. If you have several fish and feed a lot, it will pretty easily start creeping up.

That's why I use the ammonia alert badge and also keep the number of fish low to reduce stress. Usually not more than 2 at a time.

Yes you can use prime during the TTM. I usually keep some prime on hand for the just in case situations. Also, if you use prime then your ammonia test may give false readings. Seachem makes an ammonia test that is compatible with prime.

A word of caution, we do not want to use prime with copper medications. This mixture can create a toxic soup in the tank.

Update

36 hours into the TTM and my Blue Tang is dong ok but not great. He's hiding in the PVC pipe most of the time and will come out when I feed him. I've been keeping the lighting low most of the time and turning off at night. He also hangs by the heater a lot I think to hide. There aren't many hiding spots. The other thing I noticed today is that he was on his side a bit. If he does have ich I guess that would make sense. I was finally able to get a good pic this morning which i've attached. Is someone able to confirm that this is ich? He has one of those on either side of his face. One is slightly larger than the other. They have been that size since I noticed them Sunday night.

Thanks again for everyones help!!

Hi there....it is hard from the pic to tell if it is ich or not...I would keep up with the ttm for sure.....just out of curiosity what is your salinity in your current tank the tang is in?

I just did my second TTM and lowered it to 18. This tank has both Prime and Prazipro in it. The tang doesn't seem to be doing much. He looked a little discolored in the front area but it could just be the lighting. Didn't want to eat much. Also he is just sitting around kinda leaning against the glass at the bottom of the tank. I tried feeding before the transfer figuring he's gonna be stressed out after.

Is it normal for fish in QT to not just do much? I just have a feeling this guy isn't doing too well.

Sadly, i does not sound as if it is doing well. IMO leaning on the glass is not a good sign. What are you feeding it? Tangs are herbivores and it needs algae, They will eat meaty foods but is not good for their overall health.

The only thing he will eat is the frozen spirulina brine shrimp. And I have to feed him from a medicine dropper right next to him. I've tried pellets and wafers with no luck. He just seems terrified when I put anything in the tank or go near him. I had no idea about needing algae. Thanks for the info. I will put a small piece of algae wafer in again but don't think he'll touch it. I also have some seaweed that I feed my snails and ill put that on a clip towards the bottom. Now he's lying on the bottom on the side. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the prazipro helps out and he bounces out of this.

Thanks again for the info on the algae.

brine shrimp have very little nutritional value. He may be starving to death. Get some lettuce or Nori and attach it to a rock - your LFS should also have algae clips to attach to the side of the tank with suction.

If I have a difficult to feed Tang in TTM or QT I will start them on frozen Mysis but always have algae (Nori) available on a clip.

When you get a fish always find out if it is a carnivore (meaty foods), omnivore (either) or herbivore (plants).

I actually put some seaweed on a clip this morning and he hasn't touched it. I can try some lettuce. Is Romaine lettuce ok? I
