blue tang

Well my friend did a very retarded move yesterday. He got a 2inch blue tang for his 10g...Ya his 10 gallon...T E N. He was saying that the blue tang was only size of a nickel, but then it went to 2inches...I then yelled and told him the tang needs at least a 40g tank, he didn't listen to me, he was telling me that"his fish pwn my tank". A couple minutes later after answering his questions, "O my god the fish is dead!". The blue tang was on the bottom of a 10g tank barely breathing, he then put the tang in his 12g nano...He says it's doing okay, but i highly doubt that. I told him ill buy the tang off him, ill have it in my 50g tank on friday or sat.

Im posting this to show him(no hes not a member, please no cursing at him, i punched him a couple times already) that how big of a issue having a 2inch tang in a 10g is...He wont listen to me, but mabye some of you. I dont know if this is in the right thread, but w/e. And now he wants a blue clam in a 12g nanocube stock lighting(not deluxe), i told him it would die because of lighting, but he still wont listen to me. BUt, the thing that struck me the most out of all this is a fish store sold him a tang for a 10g...and the fish store is saying that it is ok to have a clam in a 12g nano. Ill show my friend this thread on like saturday.

Yeah they're cute when they're little but will outgrow your 50 in prolly a year also.
They really need a 6 ft tank. I assume your talking about a blue hippo tang? but their are 3 kinds of blue tangs that I know of (hippo, powder blue and atlantic blue). All need a bigger tank than a 50 gal but I know your trying to help.
Hippos get quite large and just don't seem to do as well in a smaller tank. They also need to graze alot on algae or be supplemented with nori.

Maybe your friend will run out of money from everything dying on him cuz he does'nt listen or do any research before buying.
Alot of LFS don't care and just want to make the sale. That's why it's best to educate yourself and do research before you buy.

It kind of sounds like he has more money than good sense.

Some LFS don't even ask what kind of tank a person has when they sell something. While they probably should be asking, I can understand why they might not have a rule about it so we can't blame them.

kasso3 is right that the buck stops with us as the tankowner. We need to do all the reading we can and ask for opinions here to make informed decisions.

that doesnt suprise me at all that the lfs sold it to him there only after one thing $$$ ....as far as the tang laying on the bottom breathing heavy has nothing to do with the fact the hes in a 10 gallon and if it did a 12 wouldnt make a differance.... tangs do not belong in a 55 gallon either as they will get pretty big btw ..... there are alot of stupid people out there and if they want to throw there $$ away then let um....as far as your buddy putting a clam without the propper lighting i guess he'll just have to learn the hard way aswell .... just make sure to tell him told ya so

Yeah, if he won't listen you'll just have to let him learn the hard way. Sounds like he's pretty ignorant, and wants to stay that way. Once the $50+ items start dying left and right, maybe he'll changes his mind, or give up.

I don't think being in a 10gal would cause the hippo to start dying, at least not in a few days, nor would moving up to a 12 gal help if that was the case. There must be another factor.

As for the LFS... I don't go to any LFS for advice, so it probably wouldn't make me stop going there, but if they really think they're giving good advice I would doubt that there livestock would be in very good condition.

My blue tangs out grew my 300 gal.... I had to upgrade to a 500gal. For now they are happy and almost 9". When I got them 4 years ago they were the size of a nickle. They really do grow, and need lots of room!!! I see a 1200 gal in my future.

I wouldn't put any kind of tang in less then a 75gal except for maby a kole tang or somthing smaller and i still wouldnt go any smaller tan a 55gal .

easy on that 1200 gallon tank ricks lol, you'll eventually have a 5000g tank. Thanks for replies guys ill show him this.
