Blue throat and redtail trigger in the same tank?

I have a pair of blue throat triggers in my 180 and I was thinking about putting a redtail trigger in. Am I going to have aggression issues because they are the same shape like tangs of the same shape have?

BUMP! I am also tagging a long as I have 2 blue throats going into a 180 as well. I did see a video on youtube that had 1 bluethroat and 1 redtail. They got along and swam up and around the powerheads for fun.

I bet if you have a male/ female pair of bluethroats and put in a male red tail you might have a problem. If the redtail was female you might be ok.

I bought them as a pair but they don't interact at all. The male is pretty timid. I think he is getting picked on my my tangs because of his yellow tail (I have a yellow, purple and sailfin tang that all like to pick on the new guys in the tank)

Since you have a pair, I'd stick with that and not add the redtail; you're likely to run into trouble in a tank that small.

I'm assuming you're talking about a crosshatch (Xanthichthys mento) and not a pinktail (Melichthys vidua), which I've also seen labeled as "redtail" in some stores.

The Redtail I was talking about is Xanthichthys ringens or the sargassum triggerfish. Was this the trigger that the OP was refferring to?

That's why I hate common names. They vary a lot from region to region (and even from store to store).

I agree with Wolverine that it would probably be best to stick with just the blue throat pair in a 180g. I don't know how you would even sex a Xanthichthys ringens. Maybe give them a little time.

Yeah this is the trigger I was talking about. I asked my LFS today and they thought they would be alright together but I am always sceptical of that LFS's tell you because they are in the interest of selling you something.

I can't imagine a Redtail/Sargassum trigger in a 65, they are pelagic fish and really need swimming room. LA/DD sells a lot of these and they suggest 125 minimum. LA is fairly realistic, for a dealer, on tank-size recommendations. I have a Redtail in a 240 (8" long) and he covers the full length of the tank in a second.

I have a 180 I just haven't changed my signature lol

i have a pair of blue throats, a humu humu and a niger in a 125, with no agression yet. my bluethroats are the most passive fish in my tank.

I added a Sargassum Trigger a little over a month ago. It's getting along very well so far with my Blue Throat (Male) and the other inhabitants which include shrimp and snails. In fact my Blue Throat seems to have become even more passive with the Sargassum new addition. The Sargassum is not shy at all. They are both approx the same size at 4" in a 120 Gallon DT.
