Blue Throat Trigger Color?

Hello,

I recently bought a BTT. I have had him in the tank for almost 2 months. Great fish. Eats like a pig and is always out with all the other tankmates. I was looking at some older pictures and I noticed that he use to really have bright yellow on the end of his back fins. I have noticed that it has really gone away. Any reason why this happened? Here are some pictures of him.

See the bright yellow dont know what happened to it!

Anything helps. Thanks,Tyler

hmmmm, I've wondered about this on a few others I've seen.

Wish I could have a bigger tank. I want a trigger...bad.

CorkPullerPHL-YEah i have no idea what has happened hopefully I can find out and get it back! What size tank do you have?

Mogley1- Feed Formula A and B, Spectrum Pellets, nori, and sometimes rods food

This is crazy. it looks like your trigger has morphed into a female. I know people are going to say that's impossible, but I once had a female blue throat triggger morph into a male. Crazy, indeed.

I'll be the first to say it's impossible. Xanthichthys triggers are dioecious, so biologists are also going to say it's impossible. It's not uncommon for a solitary male to change to female coloration (while still remaining a male). It happens much less if a female is around.

In your case, it means you bought a male with the bland female coloring, and then, in your tank, his colors brightened up, for a variety of reasons.

Thanks for the response Wolverine, Yeah I dont think it would be possible with this fish either. But it still does have a hint of that yellow on its back fins. If it were to change from a male to female then would he keep the blue under the jaw?

Wolverine- Yeah I would say the same thing

Preef-Thanks for the response, yeah I dont know. Hopefully it will color back up, but you never know. Still love the little guy though! Very cool fish!

There is an lfs in my area that has had a male FS for at least a month. in that time, the colors have faded. There is very little of the bright yellow on the fins and blue on the jaw that it had when it first arrived. Maybe a lighting thing? I know when we have gone reef fishing in the carribean, we always catch triggers in the top 5-10' over the reef and hardly ever see them past 20' when we dive. Maybe they get a lot more sun than we offer them in a captive setting.HTH

steph-Yeah the lighting might be doing something but i am not to sure just yet.

Stripestheel- Eats Formula A and B, Rods Food, Nori, and Spectrum Pellets. My water qulatiy is good just got it checked by my LFS and the last time i checked it which was about a month ago. Everything was dead on good!

Fishboy-He still has his bluejaw though. Will that eventually go away to? Hopefully not? And there still is a litte hint of the yellow there but you can barley see it.

Silverfly-Yeah I do have a recent FTS I will post it asap!
