I'm going to temp my fate at keeping a blue-throat trigger in my 75 gallon reef tank. My question is what size trigger should i buy? Im thinking the smaller the better am i correct?

There is no aggression with these triggers at all.

lmao...my bluethroat terrorized my 125g. ate 7 chromis, bit tails off both firefish, tore half the head off my sleeper and bit the entire @ss end off the large bangaii.

perhaps the fish was underfed..but i wasn't willing to experiment with feeding amounts. gonzo.

Triggerfish: Wow!! Your's and mine must on opposite sides of the spectrum. My male blue throat is a whimp. He is affraid of my bluespotted angel. Only time he shows some backbone is when the chunks of mysis shrimp is put into the tank. I keep them all pretty well fed so he is pretty plump. He doesn't swim around that much. Doesn't bother gobies, wrasses (large and small), angels (large and small), etc.

the one i had was very bold..settled in very quickly for a species that can be reclusive for up to a week upon arrival. perhaps this temperment was a sign of possible aggressiveness.
he was good size as well..5+.

Is blue jaw the same as blue throat? Well anways, we had a blue jaw trigger and tried him in the tank, but he tried to bite my madarin goby and 2 cleaner shrimp were missing:) So we put him in our agressive tank. But it's about 3" long. So he's a little too big. The smaller the better. But he did really good with the corals.

Yes, both names are used for Xanthichthys auromarginatus.

I have one in my 125, he was very shy for about 3 weeks when I added him to the tank. Now he is pretty bold and likes to swim around alot, I think he has OCD though. He always makes laps through one hole in the rock work. Anyway, he isn't aggressive to any of the tankmates, which are a yellow tang, lawnmower blenny, and a blue damsel. I like a lightly stocked tank......

I used to keep a pink tailed trigger and a Bluethroat together in my 125gal reef without any problems. I miss these fish to this day, I have learned alot since then and will wait until I have my "big" tank to try them again.

thanks,

Rick

Actually I tried that same combination, the Pink tail with the Blue Throat. The Pink Tail was very very dominating to the Blue Throat which caused me to remove the Pink Tail even though he has been there quite a bit longer. I only did this because the Blue Throat was the fish I had always wanted, but could never find.

I got mine within the same month and they were similar in size. Not only that but my pinktail was a wimp so it ended up being a good relationship between them. I eventually got to be able to get them to feed from my hand and let me pet them!

thanks,

Rick
