Blue Throats Reef Safe ????

So is it possible to tell a male from a female blue throat as I think I want to try those first that way I'm not out $100 if it goes AWOL......if not are they like clowns in that one becomes the female and the other is male by default...or is it different

also is it better to get pairs

Thanks for all the help

Ahhhh I see said the blind man.....and thats evident from the juv. stage????? is there any benefit of having a pair...if so should i do it that way

My guy is from Tony at Reef Exotics. He's a great fish and doesn't bother anything other than his food - I've had him for several months. They can be somewhat clumsy when frightened and bump into things every now and then. He broke off the top of my pink digitata while running from one of my Tunze pumps after the feeding timer expired. It was actually pretty funny. He was OK and the digitata recovered nicely.

Reef Exotics is actually where I'm thinking of ordering from :) Did you specificallyt order a male.....How long did you have him, and how are the shipping procedures there?

Keep up the great works guys this has become quite an informative thread thanks to all your information

i don't know,,,unless you just want to see the two interact. the females seem to be sort of drab..
yes,,i believe the male will always show the blue on the throat.

Well I like pairs but Im concerned that if I don't get one now then I'll never have a pair...but I think I can live without a pair of triggers

Do you have any suggestions on whether I should get a juv or adult....Is one better than the other

Ed

Actually I'm local like Julio, so, I was able to pick him up directly from Tony. I wouldn't worry though, Tony is a hobbyist himself and a very good vendor. He will take care of you.. Tell him Julio and Jonathan sent you :)

Yes, I did request a male specifically. I've had him for roughly six or seven months now.

Just curious how close is his shop to buffalo or syracuse

I may be up there later this month and may want to pay a visit and bring home something :) not that Im really interested in finally putting a trigger in the tank

i cannot remember if one is better than the other with this particular species..more often than not, you typcially can have better luck with acclimation if you do not purchase a tiny or very large specimen.. so between 2.5- 4" should be ok...

He's sveral hours from both. He's located in Long Island, New York.

hahah Long Island might pose a problem for pick up but I dont think there should be a problem with shipping do you...I live in Pittsburgh

just noticed you have a 75g..this fish may get a bit cramped after a few years of growth...not to say it cannot be done ..but maybe an upgrade down the road wouldn't hurt....

Come to think of it, I think his fish are for pick-up only... You may want to call him to check for sure.

Small bluethroats don't have any color. You need to get one 3"+ in order to be sure that you are getting a male. Male and females look the same when they are small.

Hey, I live near Philadelphia and been trying to track down a crosshatch for years, but never have been able to see one around here. From the way you guys talk, it sounds like you see them all the time at Reef Exotics. What I'm trying to ask is, do you guys think it's worth the 3.5-4 hour trip to check out Reef Exotics? What other LFS should I check out if I'm in that area?

We don't see crosshatch triggers often at all, however, we do see bluethroats. I'll tell you, you if Tony can get you a crosshatch, it might be worth a nice summer drive. No luck at Hidden Reef in Phili?

I'll have to call Tony someday, he sounds like a good guy.

No luck at Hidden Reef in Phili?

I hate the employees at THR. It's like they don't care about the customers. All they do, is stand around all day talking about other stuff while customers wait, but the thing that really gets me is that they give you an attitude when you interupt their conversation. I don't think they take special orders either. They just have a list where you can request certain fish, but I don't think the employees even look at it. Right now, I only deal with East Coast Aquatics and the Frazer Zoo, so not much in terms of LFS.

There is a store her in Manhattan that carries them all the time but they are sold for $400
