Blue Trigger - Bluethroat Trigger

Are Bluethroat Triggers and Blue Triggers the same or completely different species?

I have found a Blue Triggerfish in my LFS and have been told that it is Reef safe but wanted to check with you guys before actually buying it

What Im thinking of, they are different. Thats the problem with common names, they are impossible to keep straight. Get a look, and compare it to photos of both.

The blue trigger Im thinking of would have great fun wrecking a reef tank.

On rare occasions I've seen niger triggers (Odonus niger) labelled as blue, especially if they're lighter in color.

I would imagine they would be talking about a blueline trigger (Pseudobalistes fuscus) which is a very, very different beast than the bluejaw (Xanthichthys auromarginatus).

I was told clown triggers are also agressive, and can be friendly to other aggressive buddies

When they mature, or reach a large size, but during their childhood, they claim to be friendly.

Not sure what this has to do with the "blue" trigger, but...
They can get along with other fish when small, but they grow quickly.
I would argue that they can be quite dangerous to other large aggressive fishes.

Oh, thanks

So should they be kept in pairs?

I have 2 in there both are 2-3 " and they seem to be fine, no disturbance anywhere, from what I can see. dont want to be too uncertain.

Might have to just sell them to the agressive keepers.

Ive noticed they do fine with lions and some other types of agressives.

Are you talking about clowntriggers, or bluejaws?

Clown triggers can be kept in pairs on the rare occasions that you can get a male-female pair. Otherwise you can usually bet on one killing the other eventually.

Keeping clown triggers with lionfish is definitely NOT a good idea. Many triggerfish are excellent at chewing down lionfish spines and killing them. And unless it's a large tank, the waste produced by the dead lion can cause health problems for the other fish in a very short time.
