Blue Tubs

hi i bought at least 50+ blue tubs about 2 months ago but i have not yet seen any multiplying. my tank is 7 months established. t5 lighting. all parameters are normal. i use purple up.

i was wondering do they prefer being higher up in the tank where lighting is more intense with more flow
or lower in the tank where lighting is less and less flow.

also when i bought the blue tubs they were grown on a round ball shape thing and my friend said its hard for them to grow due to that. can someone explain this to me?
im trying to grow lots of them in my tank.

In a ball shape, the lower polyps don't receive as much light. The higher polyps will shade them. If the mat tried to grow out, it couldn't since it is shaded.

Blue is a color that deeper corals get since that is the only light that penetrates that far down.

They are known to be a slow grower. I would frag them off and place mat horizontal on a rock so they can expand and grow outward.

The Tubs blues I have grow very fast,These went from 3 polyps to this in 6 months

I'll try that again

One of the sponsers here on RC has them and will ship they are Atlantis Aquarium , they are real pro's there I live about 45 miles away and go there to admire their stock and make a purchase occasionally.

ya sure imprezed02 just swing by we'll try to frag them and hopefully that will allow more light for all the previous shaded ones. so they can expand.

btw i have tried sticking little rocks by the polyps on the side of the ball hoping that they will some how attach and travel over.
has anybody tried this to get them to travel off

wow my blue tub ball is almost like just one of your blue tub HUMPS. haha i dont know how to describe it.
but it seems like yours travel off regardless. where did you place the blue tubs. bottom of tank, low flow?

so this is my ball of blue tubs whats the best way to get this guy to spread out . by the way im thinking about fragging it some how and glueing pieces all over. do you think that will help?

i put small rocks all around it hoping the base will climb on and grow on them

My experience with zoo's and tub's in particular are they will have a growth spurt when you frag them. My colony in the pic have not grown much since they reached the edge of the rock they were mounted on.

are these an extremely small polyp'd Zoa? I just received a frag today and it's TINY.

Like all polyps, in less than ideal conditions the size of the polyps can shrink lots.

Tubs are a very average sized polyp. Not small by any means

also keep in mind that the vast majority of polyps sold as "tubs" arent tubs in the first place. I would ventrue to say 90% or more of them arent. It would be even more than that if you count the people who do have the exact same polyp but its only by chance that it happens to be the same polyp. They sell them as tubs anywya even though they dont really know. It doesnt mean they arent nice, or even nicer in some instances. It just means they are not the exact same type of polyp. There are countless different blue zoathids that people sell and trade every day as "tubs blues". Beign as they are different, the size of the polyps in any given system can vary if even you had them side by side.

I'm going to try and get a pic and post it and maybe someone can comment. I'm not seeing Blue yet but they did just ship overnight.

I also purchased what was called Armor of God and Armageddon and they've both opened right up and have good color, regardless of if they really are what they were named or not. Still happy with them.

thats what its all about.

buy what you like and like what you buy :)

accurate pics when buying/selling/trading are way mroe important than names.

flyyyguy you make a good point there.

so i did frag out that ball of "blue tubs" today and now there in 5 different pieces. i layed them onto flat rocks and hopefully they can grow better over time. =) ill take pictures once my tank clears out because i was scraping the algae off the side of my tank.

gindobuck,

How long have you had them? When I get a new zoa it usually take a few month for them to noticeably start to reproduce.

HTH,
Aaron
