Bluespotted Jawfish

I see on the compatibility list that the BSJF is rated a 2. What are the concerns with keeping this fish with seahorses? Tank size is a 125 with two Kuda's.

A better choice would be a pearly/yellowhead as the BSJF and the black cap/dusky tend to be more aggressive, and have been known to bother SH, which will typically go off their feed.

In smaller setups, which most people have for SH, BSJF's as well as blackcap/duskies tend to become more agressive and bother the SH. A yellowhead/pearly is better in those cases.

However, in a larger setup like yours, it may be OK since the SH can move away from the burrow. If you decide to try it, do let us know how it goes. Don't forget to put a good lid on the tank, as these fish are jumpers.

And I almost posted between your posts! Thanks for the info, I thought ththat helps. I would need to add mesh tops, which I should anyway, and the gravel bed is not deep enough, so I would have to address that as well. It's not something that I'm planning on doing right away, but if I do, I'll report back. I had to setup another tank for the OSFF because she was pecking at the Acans and Blastos, so if it didn't work for some reason, the Jawfish could go there. I was trying to limit the tanks to three, but you know how that goes...:rolleye1:

Tell me about it...we JUST moved 13 setups (600+ gals of water). With the exception of our two SH setups, assorted Anthias and OSFF's, all of the fish are venomous. No losses, no stings!

Ahh, you're setting up a 210 now, right?

I know my limitations and how much time I can spend on the hobby. The reef tank is already stubbed out to add another tank to share that sump, so that won't be too bad. Two FOWLR tanks sharing a sump and two reef tanks sharing a sump I can handle.

I have to ask, have you had any trouble with your OSFF nipping at corals? Once mine started in, she would not stop. She eats very well, so it's not because she's hungry. I feed all of my fish at least twice a day, even the big Queen Trigger.

Another thing that I wanted to mention, is that I started feeding the seahorses PE mysis two weeks ago. Since most of my fish are larger, I had not used mysis shrimp, and didn't realize the the PE mysis were different. Anyway, since starting the seahorses on the PE, the female has turned from black to yellow with gray stripes.

Yeah...my tankmaker is on it as I type this (it's gonna be 3/4" acrylic). I still have to tell him where I want all the holes, but I'm pretty sure I have a plan. I've never plumbed a penninsula before, and I think I'm going to plumb it thru an outside wall.

Our SH all changed color after the move...two went back to yellow and the barb went dark (it was green). I'm afraid the barb didn't handle the move well, but we'll see how it goes.

As for spending on the hobby, it's pretty much Renee's and my only vice, so it's not so bad since we both put our hobby money into the same pot. :)

My OSFF picked at a fungia until it died. Though it had a hitchhiking comb jelly that lived on under it (so cool! Too bad it's croaked) and they could have been going for that. Did not pick at my other two fungia but I removed them anyway just in case. Was starting to pick at a red lobo which I removed. Also, picks at a Montipora spongodes but doesn't seem to damage it. Polyps are just always retracted. I have various other LPS and softies and they don't seem to bother anything else. Now that I've removed those few pieces, I'm feeling pretty good to go in the "Reef safe" department with my files.

Can you post a picture of yours?

Cheers.

Same thing with the nipping. Didn't notice any real damage, but the corals were closed up constantly and not feeding. I only have one reef tank, atm, so I don't have the option of moving the corals, so the OSFF had to be moved. It's too bad, because the combination of the seahorses and the OSFF feeding worked very well. The seahorses ate the big pieces, and the OSFF ate the smaller bits, leaving not much floating around.

When the seahorses get fed before work, the tiny Leopard wrasse is sleeping, and they usually get fed later at night, and the wrasse is usually sleeping then, too. Even when the wrasse is out at feeding time, he's so small that he doesn't eat much of what the seahorses miss. That's one reason for considering a BSJF, something that will get the floaty bits near the bottom, but not interfere with the seahorses.

I saw the build thread with the idea of running the plumbing through the exterior wall. The placement of that tank is perfect as a room divider.

I had to give up Tae Kwon Do when I started my business three years ago. I could not devote the time and energy to both. As a family, we had decided that watching TV was a huge waste of time, and we needed something more constructive to do, so I started in saltwater. We have a 125 gallon FOWLR in place of a television. My wife started collecting orchids, and now appreciates the extra moisture in the air from the tanks. When someone from her orchid society was told that I have a reef tank, she said to my wife, "Oh, honey, you can have any orchid you want!" :lolspin:

Ooh la la. Do I ever get tired of looking at pictures of orange spotted filefish? No, I do not!

Your fish is very beautiful and healthy my friend. Well done. How long have you had it?

Between you and me, rehome the corals and put the OSFF back. Leopards with orange spots, that's about as good as it gets!!! (I'm talking to you, Snorvich!) :)

Happy to hear you got your animals moved, Greg. I think everyone here is looking forward to seeing pics of your new tank!

That may end up happening long term. I wasn't sure what corals the BSJF would go after. Had her since 7/24. One of the most inexpensive and one of the nicest fish I've had.

How is the Pearly Jawfish in comparison to the BSJF?

Nice picture, small alien. So the file doesn't nip sun corals, I assume? Thanks for the compliment. She is a very good eater!

Pearlies are much more mellow than BSJF's. Very cool and personable fish with just enuff "grump factor" to be fun to watch, but without bothering tankmates.

The Pearly Jawfish looks interesting. Since I have a shallow gravel bead, would this work? Any other suggestions?

Some reports of placing a small plastic bowl, overturned, with a hole in the bottom in the place you want the jawfish to build its burrow. Cover the bowl with rubble, sand, and gravel and when introducing the jawfish place the netted specimen over the hole so it will swim in. It should take to this den in short order and begin building a little fortress.

My other idea is to build a deeper tier of gravel in one of the corners or sides. Is there an area of the tank do these fish prefer?

Mine will move its burrow now and then. They seem to like a spot where they can watch the action in the tank. Mine tends to build burrows under the edge of a piece of rock. It's never made a burrow" out in the open".
