All sponges are harmless. Those appear to be pineapple sponges, which are tiny filter-feeders.

That may be a bit of an overstatement, but you're right about this one.

Well, all sponges I've heard of are harmless, and I've never seen harmful ones in an aquarium. Are there toxic ones or something?
Ah, right, fire sponges. I'd still call those semi-harmless, though, they don't hurt your tank unless something touches them.

I think there are sponges that are noxious to other reef inhabitants because of chemical defenses. Some sponges are highly invasive and can overtake corals (chicken liver sponge?). There are also sponges that can put off some nastiness if they die.

Big ocean, thousands of species, nearly as many survival strategies.

However, I agree that most sponges that hitchhike into your tank are fine.
