I started this tank a little bit ago but I'm. Just gonna start from where i am right now. I have black mangroves and red mangroves growing on top and around the island.Ill post some more pcs later

Here's a closer pic of the mangroves

The main inhabitant will be a smaller mantis shrimp with various other invents I dont mind losing, not sure on fish, also a few sps and macro algae, there is also Mangrove ferns growing on the side there

No I've been working with mangroves for a while and am pretty well versed in the biology of black and red mangroves. My black mangroves are over a year old. This tank is sumpless and I have a really unique stand. I'll take some pics tonight-also most of these pics are with my cellphone so pardon the quality

Here's a post from Aug 24/2011 on another fourm explaining the planter

Got around to some messy work today- The black mangroves where planted in a milk jug for about 6 months as a temporary hold till I get everything ready. The tank plan is to have one island where all the mangrove/plants/coral will grow and the rest open water. I finally got this down and I used two 6" PCV pipe pieces. The top piece is a cap flip over and filled my clay/sand/mud loam for the black mangroves. The bottom piece is hollow(for now) and will house the 3 maxi-jet powerheads and heater(more on this down the road). It will also be covered in expanding foam, rock, and epoxy to look like one chuck of rock. This way no equipment will be seen in the tank as many marine tank there are powerheads all over. I also worked on the black mangrove and used some bonsai techniques on them.

Mmmm tasty

Bonsai is a huge passion of mine as well so I figured I'd just combine the two! little risky but I went for it.These black mangrove I bonded the exposed wood together to make one. In time the part where the bark was chewed off with regrow and fuse together making one tree.

The next one was about 30" tall so I cut it down to 20" at the first pair of new growth and wired it to look like it growing right above the water surface. Again it will need to grow a lot before it will look good. You can also see the two pvc pieces in the shot

I'm interest to learn more about where and how you placing the powerhead. What would be the direction of flow? What about maintenance of the powerhead? Will it be easily accessible to clean out any buildup of crud?

I'm finishing that up now and will take a few pictures explaining how it all works, but yes I will ne able to get at the powerheads with ease. Since ill only have a couple sps I'm not worried about have a unholy amount of flow lol. If push comes to shove ill just get a mp10
