Borrowed a 100-400 f/4-5.6 for 30 minutes!

A guy at work has a 100-400 that I've been wanting to buy, so he said I could borrow it real quick during lunch, so I zipped home and grabbed my camera and took a couple shots at the lake.

Now I didnt have much time to get used to using the lens, but I liked my first impressions.

Killer! What focal length was #5 shot at? I am looking into a 400mm, 500mm, or 600mm prime. Already a proud owner of the 70-200 f/2.8 IS, I can't see needing the in-between after factoring in a teleconverter. If I did not already own the 70-200, I would very seriously consider a 100-400. It is legendary.

I would never borrow or rent the 100-400 (or 85 1.2L) unless I knew I had the money ready to go for a purchase. As your shots show, it's a really cool lens. I'll bet you can't wait to have one full time now.

I've got the same lens and absolutely love it. I hated the push pull thing at first but got used to it. But it makes sense. If you had to turn that length of zoom, it would take forever.

That was right at 400mm, #5 was. I was surprised it turned out so good, I had heard that this lens gets a little soft above 300, but it sure didnt seem to be the case in my experience.

This is the first time I've used an IS lens, pretty neat.

You'll have to try out the lens sometime if I ever get one, IPT

Swjim, yes, I'm now in withdrawls and I really dont want to dump the money into a new lens at this point. Arg.

The push/pull focal length is actually really easy to get used to, I liked it. I found it let me change my lengths quickly and easily, I'd probably already have carpal tunnel from just the 30 minutes if I had to twist that lens every time I zoomed in and out.

I have no clue on the species, I just call them ducks

Possibly a juvenile Pied Billed Grebe.

Another one I liked from that 30 minutes of shooting, I'm not sure why but I really like it.
