Bottled water

I was at the store buying some distiled water today and something I hadn't in the past. Sparkletts Crystal-Frash purified water. Described as "Purified by reverse osmosis and/or deionization, filtered and ozonated to ensure quality". And then they had to go ruin it with Sodium bicarbonate and sodium sulfate. Any opinion on this water?

AN RO/DI filtration system may seem expensive but pure water is the basis of any healthy reef tank. Why try to skimp in this area or procrastinate?

The RO/DI filter is actually one of the cheapest purchases a reefer will make. If you consider how much you will have invested in LR, coral, fish and inverts, the RO/DI is a very cheap investment to help insure the health of the livestock.

The RO/DI is the first line of defense against ugly nuisance algae like green hair algae. Even if you have a small nano system, you should still have a TDS meter to test the water if you are purchasing water.

I have to agree BLKTANG and Schigra
If you dont know dont use it
and in the long run it will be better just to buy a RO/DI unit.

Agreed! Bought a bottle for drinking...didn't even taste good :)

Just a first time post. Been lurking for several years now :)

There is no reason to not drink RO/DI water other than it tastes bland and is expensive to make. RO water is pretty good and is used by many, myself included since 1992.
The problem with the bottled water industry is they are not regulated and can be good one day and bad the next, you have no control over it. Having you own RO/DI unit is the only way to go.

A little story from me about bottled water...

Bought 5 gallons at Walmart for a water change. Was listed as being filtered by RO and/or DI. Mixed it with salt and did my water change. Had about 4 cups of water left...
The next day, my tank was cloudy and my livestock dead.
Before the water change, my params were 0 on the bad stuff across the board.
The day after when the water was cloudy, I checked it. I had 2.5 ppm ammonia, high trites and trates.

Took the water left over that hadn't been mixed to a friend who is a lab tech with the local water works. He tested it and the water had 7.5ppm Ammonia, 25 ppm Nitrites and 15 ppm Nitrates.

With results in hand, I went to Walmart and spoke with the manager. They took care of us. But it was the last time I bought drinking water from them and I will never go without RO/DI on hand for as long as I own a reef tank.

I concur with the thought that it is cheap insurance. It takes just 1 bad batch or water that you have no control over to make a mess of things.

A good RO/DI unit from any sponser here is the way to go in the long run and a cheap investment in the long run, and they all give great CS when you have a question/problem. Most are cheaper on the unit and filter replacement the MD and the Dr's. Live, pay and learn, or trust what has been told to you here!
