Bought a cycled tank

Coralful

In Memoriam
I recently purchased a saltwater tank that was fully cycled. I brought home 50% of the tanks water and added 50% of new RODI water at the LFS.

I got corals and fish in the tank and now I have a diatom bloom.

Would my fish and soft corals be ok in there? I will be testing water tomorrow and water change.

Depending upon how you transferred all the contents, it's possible that there is a 'mini cycle' going on, so you definately should test for ammonia. Diatoms are nothing to worry about frankly. CUC will take care of much of it, and as the silicates in your new water deplete so should the bloom.

Were the livestock living in the tank when you bought it?

First, if yes, you may have lost some bacteria while you removed most of the water when you moved the tank. Most bacteria are not waterborne but you could have removed some substrate for the bacteria as you removed the water.

Second, if no, then I am not sure the tank is still cycled. Some of the bacteria could live for months in a wet fallow tank, but most will not be viable after long enough, a few months. In such a case , you should have recharged the tank with a pulse of ammonia, say 2ppm.

did you add RODI or salt mixed with RODI water? if you added just RODI water, your salinity will be very low. you should check water parameters. as for diatoms, i wouldn't worry about them.

Yes the tank came with the livestock. I added some rodi salt mixed water and toping off with rodi. salinity is at 1.022. I will check the rest of params later today.

I am more worried for the livestock more than the diatoms. Hopefully none of parameters swing and kill them.
