I just bought a tank raised clown for my 20 gallon long...My concern with getting a clown was that it stay at the front of the tank boring as heck....Two seconds into the tank, hes in the corner...running up and down the glass, a visual eye sore to my tank set up. He is oblivious to the big pile of rocks behind him he could hide in. Two hours later with teh lights off hes still doing this, and is annoying me.

How long does this last....if It doesnt change Im getting rid of it.

in my experience most clowns dont spend much time in the rockwork. if you are looking for a fish that will swim in and out of the rocks you could try getting some type of wrasse.

dont get annoyed its just a fish finding its place in a strange world. Ive never heard of somebody getting upset about something like that.

give him some time and maybe he will find a better place.

I just put a sebae into my 20 a week ago, and he's settled into a place. He used to hide in this corner, but now he's found a new spot. Give him some time, and he'll eventually acclimate into his new home.

lol... I love the title. I HATE HIM! lol lol lol .... Dude, give him a couple days hes probably not used to such a clean wall like yours so he thinks its a bigger tank than it actually is, (no) but just give him some time man, he'll get used to it.... I love them

I have a sixline...hes pretty much left him alone. Every once in a while hell swim up show him his side then go away. I had two clowns in a 55 once and they stayed in the upper right hand corner for about two weeks, and never moved..So I got rid of them. But since then Ive seen these ocellaris(sp?) clowns in other peoples tanks being active, exploring etc. So I took a chance and tried again. I know they dont actively go through the rock like my sixline but I dont want him hovering in front of my glass 24/7 in one spot.

out of the 5 clowns I've owned
the two tomato's (ORA Tank Raised pair) explored
the two Sebae's (wild Mated pair) explored
The False Perc (ORA Tank Raised) ran up n down the front/side of the glass for the 6 months i had him.....after about 3weeks he settled down and started to feel more comfortable but wouldn't venture far from the glass.

just my experience

Still like to know whats used for flow? All fish will find an area hes happy with and stick around to it unless feeding. Its reefing.

i have 2 clowns in a 20G holding tank with a koralia nano powerhead. the clowns love to hang out against the back glass at night right in front of the powerhead, constantly swimming into the glass.

I never saw this as a bad thing. the fish must have a reason for being comfortable there. maybe the reason it doesnt both me is that I know the 20G holding tank is only temporary.

Way low. They are lacking oxygen. Proper water movement is there main O2 supply. Its an exchange done at the surface and flow is needed. You would need about 10 of those for flow.

is the 250gph powerhead the only flow? or do you have an HOB filter or anything? hob filter will oxygenate the water alot more than a powerhead.

That sounds like typical clown behavior especially new to a tank. Give him some time to get used to his new home.

I think im taking him back tomm while I can...just something bothers me about a fish on the glass all the time...ruins the look of a smaller tank. I think all tank raised clowns do this, not the wild ones.

Oscellaris clowns generally find the top corner of the tank and call it home. Percs spend more time in the rocks, but the tomatoes, and maroons spend the most time in the rocks, and if you get them an anemone, they'll love you forever. My Ocellaris has spent the last 7 years in the top right corner. I don't believe she has any inclination to change now.

Well I'm gonna tell you right now, pretty much all ocellaris are going to do that, I've got a pair of normal ones that take host to a queen conch shell and a pair of B&W ocellaris that just stay in the top corner of the tank. If you want them to settle down find them a host.

Many fish pace the glass when they're stressed -- give your little girl (or soon to be girl) some time to settle in and she'll start showing off her goofy personality. She's just been through a lot - transfer from the ocean or a breeding facility to a store, possibly via a wholesaler, and then to your house - that's a lot of moving around in a short time, and yet another new tank to get used to.

Keep the conditions stable -- clowns thrive on routine. Use a light timer, keep your hands out of the tank, don't rearrange the tank or add anything new for a while, and within a few weeks she'll calm down and you'll find yourself getting attached to her. My ocellaris wasn't terribly thrilling for a long time, but once she decided to find a host she developed more personality. She's living in a big colt coral now, and spends her days alternately searching for more food (clowns are pigs) and defending her host from curious fish and hermits.

Clowns will adopt other things in lieu of an anemone -- corals, macroalgae, even a heater or powerhead -- so you don't need to rush out and buy a nem for her to be happy, but you might want to consider getting her a mate somewhere along the way; clowns are 10x more fun in pairs, IME. My maroons are positively goofy, they squabble and make up like an old married couple :D
