Bowl rock

I was talking with another reefer the other day and he was talking about how buying mexican bowl rock for a reef is a bad Idea. Supposedly it leaches iron into the water. Say what???

It looks like great rock to start live rock or just use and understructure. Anybody heard of this? I did notice some orange color on alot of the bowl rock for sale, but I always thought it was lichens.

Leaching a tiny bit of iron into the water wouldn't be all that bad. It's an algal nutrient.

Having said that I've never even heard of Mexican bowl rock. What is it, where does it come from?

I used some of that stuff in my yard and wondered about using it in a reef too :) It's also called Mexican Pot Rock. It's orangish in color, pretty porus, and has really cool shapes, caves, holes, etc... You can get it at most landscaping places.

Poor, poor little damsel.....

As to where you can get it... O-street sells it as "bowl rock"

And Your Reef has it too. It looks really cool. All kinds of holes and really light wieght.
