Just Got a Hippo tang and was wondering the gender. How can you tell? Here's some pics

Thanks footballdude, and thanks everyone else for the info. Do these tangs like to graze on the algae u clip on a strip? I haven't seen it take any, but I've only had it since last night.

I've h eard off hand accounts that males have a "sandpapery" patch near the base of the tail and females do not, but this is not confirmed.

If it won't take it off clip might try rubber band so to a piece of rock , thats the way I do mine seems to be more natural for them . It is also a little early yet , give it some time and you could put some in now just be sure not to leave it in there long term as it separates and goes to waste .

as far as telling male from female...flip a coin and give it a gender neutral name.

as for algea.. mine hasnt touched any nori period..but eats everything else i put in the tank and has more than doubled/ almost trippled in size since i got him a month ago.. but i have a yellow tang that wont touch any food other than nori and has more than doubled/ almost trippled in size since i got him at the same time as the hippo...
