Brain xart

During a water change I added fresh rodi to my tank thinking it was the salt batch. This lowered my reading from 2.4 to 1.04. The urchin is trying to climbed up and half way out of the water flailing its spines. God only knows what my fish and coral are feeling.
I know that I feel sick.
Any advice will be very helpful now.
Thanks

First you need to post the correct salinity for your tank. You first said 2.4 then it went too 1.04 so I'm confused as to which is right.

My salinity in my tank was 2.4 before I did a water change. Rather than adding salt water back into my tank, I added fresh water BY mistake that brought the salinity level down to 1.04.
Ok? Sorry if I wasn't clearer the first time.

Procedure? Rate of raising the salinity.
If you need to raise it your best bet is to mix up a STRONGER batch of saltwater then your CURRENT tank water, then do a water change with the stronger water. It won't be an exact science. The stronger saltwater will dilute itself down with your in tank water.

Example:
Tank water is specific gravity of 1.0
You want a specific gravity of 2.0
You would need to mix up a batch of saltwater with a specific gravity of 3.0+ and drain some tank water and add the higher specific gravity of saltwater to dilute down to 2.0

I'm confused with your salt though, if I'm not mistaken SG should be 1.025ish. NOT 2.4

1.024 is what they are intending on communicating to us ... clearly another "brain xart" ..:debi:

I hope this post is an after the fact and you have already fixed this because it would be another "brain xart" to go to the internet to wait on a solution instead of immediately fixing the problem..

If you have a sump you should have just been dumping salt into it letting it mix in till you achieve proper levels or if you don't then yes you should have made another batch of water (with salt this time :fun5: )and got the levels back up..

Your not using the actual specific gravity of 1.017 and 1.025 is causing much of the confusion.

Otherwise, going from 1.024 to 1.017 is way too quick, but at least they handle a drop better than a rise and 1.017 in itself isn't bad. IF everything still looks ok I'd bring it back up slowly. It's no different than acclimating something bought online and ships to you at about that level. Any damage from the rapid drop has likely already happened since half a day has already passed. 0.001 every few hours is likely where I'd try to keep it until back over 1.020 and then about 0.001 a day. Had you rapidly corrected it when it happened it wouldn't have been as much of an issue.

Edit: I'm basing that on just your last post where you used 1.7. You had also mentioned a 1.04 above and I can't figure out what you meant there either.

Thanks Scooter. I was actually brain dead there too. This is my current reading.
SG 1.017
Eventual Target is to be SG 1.024 over gradual raises of .001.

Ok 1.017 is much better and not an immediate rush situation..

Put saltwater in your ATO.. let it come up on its own over time..
