Breaking Live Rock?

Just wondering if breaking live rock was a good idea. I had a 150 gallon set up and now am building a 75. The pieces of rock I had for my 150 are huge.

Essentially, I have 5 really big pieces that seem too big for my 75. Is there a good way to split these somehow and is it recommended?

I should also add that these pieces are quite porous.

If it were me, I'd use a hammer. I guess you could use your forehead, but that might hurt. It will not hurt the Liverock at all to be broken into whatever size works best for your tank.

oh - I would also suggest eye protection

I did this for some live rock taken out of a 180 to put in a 12g. Just took a hammer to it.

I've used an awl (sp?) in the past as well, to get a clean break.

Hammer or a bigger less porous rock or cement

I did it with a hammer and a drift pin. Basically a big pointed chisel. A big nail would also work good. Anything with a point you can hit in there will give you a little more control of how it breaks, but if you don't care just hit it with a hammer.

I cut some with a wet saw once to give me a nice flat edge for my base rock it worked great on the bottom of my tank but yes a hammer works well

I cut some peices with a hack saw it worked well. if I did it again I would score it with a saw then hit it

Put in a 3 mil garbage bag and beat the living snot out of some before. Used as fuge rubble.

An old wood chisel and hammer works for me

i like to use an m80 firecracker.

I just used a flathead screwdriver and hammer. On a towel of course.
