Breeding Firefish, Jawfish, Grama Loretto and Cleaner Fish

My recent interests have focused on some of the smaller fish, besides some of the less common clowns. Anyone here raising any of the above? Some of my favorites, and worth doing just for doing it.

I'd love to hear about this too, specifically the firefish and jawfish. Have two firefish that 'seem' to be a pair; though the jawfish is solo currently as the other I got with him died. Contemplating finding him a replacement mate, but curious if its a reasonable line of thought to breed them! :)

Its been done, not a lot though, but I think that they'd be fun, and a lot of fun watching the larvae develop. Which is why I was wondering. Unlike the Mandarins that are pelagic spawners these are nest builders, and you can pair them off from groups. I also include the Loretto Grama in these.

I recently bred sharknose (cleaner) gobies, and this was my first attempt at breeding. Once paired, they seem to nest and lay eggs soon after (especially compared to the b/w occellaris pair I'm still waiting on).

The babies are now almost 2 months post hatch, and are only about an inch long!

How big were the gobies at spawning?

I have been thinking of putting 6 in a 20L with 3-4 caves scattered around the tank. About a 2-3" substrate of aragonite. Some scattered soft corals and macro algae.

What will you be feeding the larvae/fry ?

The parents were both around 2 inches, and fairly fat (from being fed 3 times a day). They were in a 10G and took over a Koralia pump that was luckily switched off. Caves are a good idea! Be prepared for aggression before they start breeding - I had to separate them a couple of times.

I keep the fry in greenwater with rotifers until day 20, then newly hatched brine shrimp until they start eating dry foods (otohime, spectrum small fry formula, crushed flakes). They love frozen cyclopeeze as soon as they can fit in their mouths!

That sounds like almost classic gobi breeding from what I have read, these are my favorites, there are several others that I like to, I am hoping with the 20L to have plenty of refuge places, with live rock and made caves. The trick will be to place so I can still get the larvae out. What kind of lights are you using?

I have an 18" Nova Extreme fixture - T5HO (2x 18 W) in that tank. The larvae are phototactic, so you can use a strong torch beam to get them situated for removal. Following Joyce Wilkerson, I use a small bowl to retrieve larvae. Using a baster means lots of mortalities before Day 2.

Once a pair forms, you might want to remove the others to avoid intrasexual aggression.

I have used the bowl, works well,

a baster could be pretty violent for small fry, thats for sure.

Might set them up in 15s then and move the non paired on out.
