I have been researching breeding Bangaii's for nearly a year.
When some came up at the LFS, I figured there was no better time than now to start.
I purchased thier last 3 fish, and hoped for a pair. With three fish, I figured that my chances of getting a pair were about 87.5%
Within a few hours of placing them in a small tank connected to my main tank, there was obvius displays happening, but I wasnt sure if it was the fish trying to determine who as who, or if they were staking out thier territory. After 3 days of one perticular fish always staying to the other side of the tank, and 2 fish never being more than 6 inches away from each other, I figured that they had decided they were a pair. The 3rd wheel has moved onto my display tank and I am going to find a mate for (I think) her. I believe that I have determined a way to sex them, but want to try finding a mate for this fish using that method to see if it proves correct. Ill keep everyone posted.
I purchased them on Decmber 20th of 2008. And they only ate mysis at the time. My first hope was to get them on something different than mysis. It took about a week and a half, but I got them onto the food that I make, and they love it. Thier growth has been noticable even in the month that Ive had them.
About a week ago, I decided that I would try to start "conditioning" them to spawn, by feeding. Three to Four times a day, all they could take in a feeding. I noticed that one fish was getting perticularily fat above the anal fin, and there was slight yellow discoloration, I hoped it was eggs developing, but I didnt want to get too excited.
I came home from work Wednesday the 28th and took a quick look at the tanks like usual. The one that was fat and had discoloration was skinny, and back to the normal body color in that area. The other fish looked like it had marbles in its mouth. A spawn? I ate supper, went back and looked agian to make sure I wasnt faking myself out. Sure enough, they had indeed spawned..
Ive decided to hatch out baby brine and enrich them with Selco.
I got done with work earlyer this week than I expected. I was getting nervous that when the eggs hatch, the fry would be swollowed, so I built an egg tumbler and went for the gusto.
It was really nerve wracking for me, and the fish Im sure, but we got the job done.
I stripped the eggs at about 1pm on Thursday, Feb 12th. These pictures are at about 7 AM on the 13th.
As far as I can see the eggs are in thier 17th day of delopment.
The egg tumbler is working well. the pictures are fairly self explanitory but if theres any question feel free to ask.
I made and upwelling tumbler out of 20oz soda bottles and a small powerhead I had laying around.
You can see my trusty sidekick (my 2 year old daughter) in the background. She LOVE's all of the fish, and corals.
My count right now is 24. Not bad. No casualtys overnight, wich is re-assuring because I was gut-wrenched nervous all day, thinking that I had probably frigged something up.
Google video of egg tumbler. Not sure how to make it show up on here.
