Breeding Setup Questions... Plus show me your setup!

Hi all!

I'm thinking about setting up a small operation to play with to see if I can do it. :) I would ultimately like to breed mandarins, but first I believe I need to start with clowns.

I have a great local source to get a good pair from (Sustainable Aquatics... they're now an RC sponsor... Matt and crew ROCK! They have great pairs up for sale), although I'm not 100% sure which species I'll do (only one to begin with :) ), but I may do the black and white ocellaris.

Anyway, I'm not really sure how things would be setup. It makes sense to me to have maybe 3 or 4 29g growout tanks all in one system with a sump and skimmer and maybe some base rock to turn live (the goal being not to introduce any parasites to the system that would be possible with Live Rock) for filtration. Maybe a RDSB if need be for nitrates. (FWIW, I'm not 100% sure on tank sizes and numbers just yet as I'm not sure how many it will take to theoretically keep one species going for the 4 months I think it takes before you can sell them... I need to do some number crunching :) )

However, what about the larvae tanks? I would be worried about them all being in one system for infection control, but more than that, I would be concerned with the plumbing and now sucking larvae down into a sump or having rotifers cycle through the tanks. Is there a way to have them all on one system? FWIW, I do plan on having a controller on these tanks... more specifically, my Aquatronica can control technically I think 256 tanks, so for it to pull triple duty (display tank, larvae tanks, grow out tanks) isn't an issue. :)

Also, if you guys want to share pics of your setups, that would be awesome!

Oh, and I'm definitely planning on getting Wittenrich's book and maybe one of Moe's or Wilkerson's. I have a feeling a lot of my questions could be answered in one or all of those, but I thought I would ask here too as I'm broke at the moment... :D

Thanks much!

Brandon
