breeding systems?

what are you thinking about breeding? Clowns, designer or what type? Just curious. It does sounds interesting and in the long future, when i have more time+funds, i would like to do that also.

Shrimp sound like a real challenge!!

Doesnt bother me at all, I am just wondering why he said dont do it. I mean if there is a downside i should know it.

As a hobby, do it.
To make money, don't do it.

It's fun, and I enjoy breeding my fish. Don't expect to make money or anything on it though. You'll learn a lot about the food chain, the life cycle of the animal, and plenty more. It would be good for your kids to see. The whole "circle of life" type thing. Family members will think you're crazy though.

They go into my basement and see 10+ tanks, lights, phytoplankton bubbling. They think I've lost it. It's all good though :D As soon as they see a bunch of 1/2" clownfish swimming around, they change their mind.

Joe you and I have talked alott. I am definitely not looking for a business. Just seems like fun to me. Not to mention everyone i know will have free clowns haha. (unless i dont like you or one of my friends dont like you or your name is phil or i can pronounce it haha) Sorry no coffee yet this am

I'm looking to break mine down. I just don't have the time or the capability to monitor things at night when I'm not at school.

There is definitely a significant time commitment if you're going to do it right.

yea it def sounds neat!
I've read that the clowns are easier than shrimp. It is crazy that just a few years ago shrimp could not be breed.

Shrimp tend to be difficult because they cannibalize each other. Clowns are one of the easiest egg layers. Bangaii cardinals are probably the easiest fish of all though. More effort should be given to captive bred bangaii.

it's fun. the deal breaker for me was time. 50 tiny steps that need to be done daily, or that are time sensitive. with a life, wife ,kids it gets hetic. you need a space that's yours alone, and 15 min 24/7. joe has a nice setup. i'd do it with the understanding ,i'd fail the majority of the time

are you still doing it

Dont do it!!!!

Unless you have at least 8-12+ hours per week to dedicate, I suggest you take Chris's advice and consider something more practical. It's a very rewarding hobby but also extremely time consuming, especially in the beginning.

If you decide to try it out, I would highly recommend you purchase this book- it's been a great help to all of the successful clownfish breeders I know.

Also be sure to check out the MBI site where you can get tons of info and talk mono y mono with some of the most successful marine fish breeders on the planet.

Clownfishes is good, but I preferred Matt Wittenrich's book. It's more affordable, has more species, and is a little more up to date. Plus, he's from Western NY, which is kind of cool.
