Bright Green Algae

What does bright green algae on my live rock mean? Is it a precursor to coraline? My parameters are all good. One of my large rocks directly under my MH is completely covered in bright green algae.

Also whats bubble algae? Ive got 4 or 5 ugly looking bubbles clumped together on one rock.

Will brown algae die on its own? My sipon tube in the overflow box which is clear is completely covered in brown algae and I can't clean inside the tube.

Thanks for the help...

Green is most likely hair algae. As your tank matures and you get the nutrients under control, it will die off and go away. Start doing lots of water changes, test for nitrates and phosphates, and keep doing water changes until those both test for zero.

How long are you running your lights in a day? What is your lighting schedule?

Use a clean, new, soapless bottle brush to clean your overflow tube. It won't go away by itself. It's probably also restricting the flow a little bit. Be careful with it though as it's most likely made from acrylic and it's fragile.

the brown algae is diatomes. its normal for a new tank. what kind of brite green algae do you have? is it folacious or calcerouse encrusting?

Its not green hair algae. I had that already and my turbo snails clean that up quick. Its bright green powder like.

I would cut back on the lights a bit. Maybe cut down to 8 hours for now. If you dont have any corals I would cut it down to about 5 hours a day.

"so the bright green algae is good or bad?"

It’s really up to you, isn’t it?

As far as what effect it will have on your water chemistry, it’s all good.

The green algae will oxygenate your water through photosynthesis and consume nitrates and phosphates in the process. So, if you don’t mind looking at it in your tank, and it hasn’t become so overwhelming that it’s interfering with your coral’s health, then why worry about it?

I used to have a lime-green colored algae in my last FO tank and I thought it was really nice-looking. My Angels thought so, too.

Don’t get too caught up with keeping your aquarium algae-free. I think that’s a misconception, unless it’s that really ugly brown/red slime.

Like they type I have in my tank... :)

Sorry to chime in like that, just think its funny how I get landed with a tank full of disgusting brown/red hair/slime algae. I always say to myself, "why cant it just be green?" I could live with green hair algae. Certainly nicer then what I have now!

Good luck...
