Brine Shrimp Anyone?

Also the best brine shrimp eggs to use is Sanfrancisco Bay they have a higher fatty content. The other brands are the type from the Salt Lake. Something to look into. When I used to breed fish, myself and other breeders would bite the bullet and buy the Sanfrancisco brand. You get better results in color and size. I also recommend decaping your eggs because brine shrimps are known to harbor bacteria when cultured. Its a cool project and very rewarding to feed your fish!!!

How much do you guys feed your tank at once? Maybe in terms of how many eggs you use??

After talking with brineshrimpdirect about the new hatchery dish I decided to buy that instead of the standard 2 liter stand. I guess the main difference is that it makes a smaller batch.

The dish uses 1 liter of salt water and 1/2 gram (about 1/4 tsp) of eggs. Which hatch in 24 hours.

How does this compare with all of your set-ups?
Thanks
Dave

With a 2 liter (maybe 1.5 liters total voulme) and 1 teaspoon I get 90%+ hatch rates within 24 hours.

When ever I decaped, I had less success with my fry. I also had less sucess with the sanfrancisco brand vs the stuff from BSD. I never researched either of them... , just my experiences. My clowns seem to get some pretty good coloration with the eggs from BSD.

Hey Rod, I heard your little shin-dig was a big success.

With the exception of growing "Sea Monkeys" when I was a kid, this is my first try at Brine Shrimp.

Is "decaping" the removing of their skins or whatever they're called? I thought they kind of fell of and floated, separating from the live brine.

How do you decap?

decap/decapsulating is basically burning the "shell" off of the egg with a bleach solution. Its been many years since I have decapuslated. Its not a difficult process, but I found it unnecessary, had a lower yield of baby brine, and seemed to have less success with my clowns.

I decaped once following the recipe in WIlkersons book. Used the ice and all, but the eggs didn't really seem to be fizzing, use generic bleach, not clorox. Don't now if that mattered. hatch rate seemed ok, but still kinda looked like some shells in there. Thought it was a bit of a pain and not with my time from what I hear. Haven't had any problems with the 90& grade from BSD, so I guess I won't fix it if it ain't broke. Hope this helps...Carl
