Brown algae and growth coming out of live rock

Hi everyone!

I'm setting up my first reef tank, and it's almost cycled and ready for life. My live rock was cured in a bucked with RO water before setting up the main tank for approximately six weeks. It was completely white when I first put it in the tank, and now it's starting to become covered in brown (algae?). I'm also noticing a tube-like growth coming out of one of the pieces. I've attached pictures, so hopefully they upload I'm just wondering if I've done something wrong, or if the algae is part of the cycling process. Also wondering what kind of hitchhiker the growth is and if it's going to be harmful or a pest in the long run. Any advise would be much appreciated as I'm still learning and very new to this awesome hobby!

I see all colors on my liverock. The goal is to have macroalgae win the war. I've never started from this point in the beginning but I don't stress over growth of tubes and algae. I would continue to use ro which the tds meter shows 0 or up to 10 and buffer it AND regular water changes with quality saltwater made with ro and not tap water...ensure good circulation and add macroalgae, elements etc. If the focus is on water quality and optimal water measurements your tank will flourish with time.

Normal... Brown algae will be the first algae to colonize the rock. It will go away after a while depending on how well the rock was prepped.

The amount of Silicates in the water will play a role in the duration of the Diatom bloom as well.

I had that too but it started to go away after a while. However it will get really really worse before it goes away. :uhoh3:
Be patient.

curing is usually done in warm salt water. If it starts going green all over, get a GFO reactor to take out the phosphate. Not sure ro will do it.
