How do I get rid of this stuff? It is growing on my sandbed and starting to creep up on my live rocks. I have turbo's, ceriths, astraes and Nassarius snails as well as scarlet leg and blue leg hermits.
first, how long has this tank been set up? Diatoms will go away on there own in a new setup...but what are your nitrates and phosphates at? Those feed it, so if you got those, you're feeding algae..keep those 0 and it will go away on its own.
My setup isn't new (over 6 months old), the last time i had my water params checked a couple weeks ago nitrates were up a bit, not dramatically but above 0. I think this may be due to overfeeding. I'm feeding 1/4 a cube of Formula One mixed with 1/4 cube of frozen Brine Shrimp once daily. I have 4 fish (2 blue/green chromis, 1 sixline wrasse and 1 false percula clown). Should I cut down on the feeding?
well nitrates can go really high really fast...so 2 weeks is PLENTY of time for them to skyrocket. Mine went from 2 to 150 in 4 days while i went on vacation, so 2 weeks....you better get that tested before you do anything else..same with phosphates.
Also, any frozen food (and many other foods for that matter) will add phosphates.
Lastly...6 months is still considered "new" to a certain point...i had an algae bloom at the six month mark on my 55..no nitrates or anything. But then it went away in like a week tops.
