I was away for a few weeks and didnt get to do water changes. I now have a brown stringy like algae growing in my tank. I did two large water changes since i have been home. I tried to suck out as much as possible but it seams to grow right back. Im not able to suck it all up. What can i use to kill it off. with out hurting the reef tank???

test for phosphates as well. Phosphates will contribute to algae growth. You can also cut down on lighting.

i have gotten the "brown snot" before. it shows up in higher nutrient conditions for me, as in the brink of a mini crash or bogus feeding regimen.

You have dinoflagellates. Keep up your routine of trying to remove as much as possible. Do your water changes. Turkey baste off you liverock. Perhaps kick your lights down an hour or two. If possible feed less. It will take some time and some frustration but it will go away. At least mine did using the above mentioned schedule. I just never gave up and tried to remain consistent. Eventually it went away.

Good Luck --landlord
