What are you basing your need to change he filters on? Is your color changing RO/DI media changing color? Is the TDS increasing out of the DI? The RO? Or are you on a regular schedule to change prefilters?
Generally a 5 stage gives you room for two sediments, a carbon, your RO and your DI. I like to make sure that first sediment is larger pores than my second and that my second is same size pores as my carbon. You should know the optimal tds after your RO and your DI (the cheapo dip tds meters work fine). Ideally we should all keep a regular schedule to change the prefilters (sediment and carbon) so that we never burn out a good RO membrane (expensive and last a long time as long as you don't get chlorine in there). And, keep an eye on the DI color and tds out so we know when to change the resin (keep the refill resin on hand).
If your tds is increasing out of the DI I would check to be sure that the water out of the RO is still in range. Then I would go ahead and change the DI resin and perhaps the prefilters- this puts you on a regular schedule of sorts. Each time the DI burns out you change the prefilters as well so you don't have to worry about them. The biggest issue is that all source water is different. Some of us might need to change the prefilters more frequently than the DI resin, some could get away with longer (though why chance it!). Best way to be sure is to grab a chlorine test kit and test the water out of the carbon block to make sure it's still zero. That way you know that your change schedule is fine and the filters were not overdue and that each time you change the resin you can change the pre-filters. Hopefully the RO membrane lasts you for years to come.
Cheers,
