Bryopsis Breakout

It could be my terrible camera, that does not help. It seems to me to be Bryopsis, feathery in texture and my Kole Tang wont touch it. I put in algae sheets from ocean nutrition that he loves. I remember reading somewhere that most herbivores dont like the taste of Bryopsis. Im 90% sure its bryopsis. Maybe I can get a better picture tomorrow for you guys.

Thanks!

in the mean time one of the best ways of manual removal is to take one rock out at a time and scrub it off with a toothbrush.be sure to rinse it off real good before putting it back in your tank.it can start a new colony from just a tiny fragment.

I tried that once already. I removed all of my rock and scrubbed it in 3 different buckets. I also bought 20 red leg hermits. To no avail it returned even stronger this time.... Its so bad its just blowing around the tank....

i know.mine was just as bad.your going to have to reduce the amount of phosphate going in to your system.your live rock is saturated with phosphate and the bryopsis can live on that alone for months even if you stop feeding your fish completely.your phos. test might read zero but if you could test the center of your live rock it would knock you out of your seat.i got mine down to 0.00 on a salifert test kit by reducing feeding and using gfo.and when the bryopsis finally absorbed all phos. out of the live rock it died and hasnt returned for more than a year now.

thats what i would do if i were you.ive never tried it but ive heard of great results from it.there is a current thread going in this forum on the subject that might help tremendously.let us know how it works and good luck.

Two questions:

1. Why do I have GHA when my levels are undetectable by testing?

2. What is the best way to remove it from my current live rock, BEFORE I add it to my new setup?

Thanks

nope, everything should be fine, flow the instructions on the byropsis threads

Where are these bryopsis threads? I'm dealing with it too. Small outbreak in my 55 but enough that i want it gone before it gets out of control.

Add some lettuce nudibranchs (Ellysia crispata). That's what I did, solved my problem!

Only bad part about it is once it was all gone they just dissapeared so I fear the worst for them.

I can not understand why most people in this hobby do not understand that all snail will eat this algae if there is not enough food for them....you can do a simple experiment...take a snail put it where it has no food for 3 days drop the snail in the middle of hair algae an see him eat his heart out....put 80 to a 100 snails in your 55 gall tank and your hair algae will be gone in a month...you do not put hermits in your tank allthey do is kill snails as you can see they dont eat algae.

I would have your test kit checked against a different one to make sure its accurate.and also i cant see it happening to start with in a 55 gallon with only 2 fish and one of those is a herbivore unless you are way over feeding.the algae may be using the nitrate up faster than its detectible.

I do not overfeed at all, I take a few slivers from a cube of formula 1 and 2, soak it in garlic and feed. The wrasse greedily eats everything and anyhting I put in there. I only feed them once daily too. So its not overfeeding, IMO.

I have some snails 10 nassarius and 5 tronchus. What kind would you suggest? You dont have to be rude about it either!

cutegecko- I took some water to that Fish Place and they tested it with their API's. Same results, they were actually suprised that I was running 0 Nitrates and had an GHA problem, to say the least.

wow!thats suprising.also because your tang wont touch it they will usually eat any green algae besides bryopsis.you might try a large sea hare ive heard of them mowing down a 120 gallon tank with gha in a few days.

My tang not touching it was the reason I thought it might be bryopsis. He will only eat the algae sheets I put in there. I might have to get something, snails and sea hares are still only a temporary relief. I need to find the source of my problem.

Thanks Guys!

I have started to dose Kent Tech-M for about 3 days now. I have seen a BIG drop off in growth of bryopsis/gha on my rockwork. I syphoned my rockwork this weekend as part of my maintainence. It was removed very easily with just a syphon. Fingers are crossed!

Unless you are grossly overfeeding GHA and bryopsis can grow fast enough to consume nutrients as fast as they are introduced so no matter how often or what brand test kit you use you'll only see 0's.
