Bryopsis treatment

Been watching bryopsis or Derbesia spread slowly for over a year now. Nothing eats it and manual removal just causes it to spread. Did a lot of reading and it seems safe enough for all tank inhabitants from the anecdotal information. The algae was starting to overgrown some smaller corals and limiting growth on colonies.

I turned my skimmer off and dose 12,000 milligrams, aka 60 capsules last night. My fingers were sore from opening them all! My stonies look really great, so I'm hoping they stay that way.

I've use flucanozole in the past without any ill effects. I've read that some folks are using low doses as preventative maintenance.

I went through a few treatments of flux rx aka fluconozole. One treatment I swear that it made my coral colors pop! Then the second time my corals didn't like it at all. After two weeks I noticed a pretty significant death in my algae but not all was gone. I read this might be caused by my low alkalinity. I called Blue Life and they sent me their largest bottle to try again with higher alk. It is advised your alkalinity is 9 or greater when dosing flux rx (according to their flux rx guy). This is why I dosed multiple times. After getting my alkalinity up and dosing about two times the amount recommended, most of the bryopsis died! But it all came back because I feed to darn much...

After each time dosing flux, I noticed a cycle. The bryopsis would die off and then I would have brown slime (looked very much like dinos), then red slime. I am not sure if the flux causes this cycle but it happened every time I dosed flux and I had to cover the tank and dose bacteria to get rid of the brown slime.

I started vodka dosing this week 1 ml per day this week to kill what's left of my bryopsis. Also slowing my feeding habits down [emoji6]

Yeah without actually removing the excess nutrients from the tank the problem wont go away.

I had a plague of bryopsis 2 years ago. Bought a scribbled rabbit fish and the pig ate it all. I had bad bubble algae too that the rabbit wouldnt touch. I began pulling it off and the rabbit would catch the pieces floating around and then he started eating it off the rocks. Those fish are absolute pigs...in a good way.

So, 15 days after treatment some of the algae had thinned out, but most of it is still there. My guess is not all of it was Bryopsis, or my dosage wasn't high enough. I'm going to try manual removal in patches and see how it goes. No adverse effects on life that I could see, except some of the vibrancy in SPS coloration.

What is your alkalinity?
