BTA exploded???

Got home from work today and couldn't find my new (about a week old) BTA. Water was cloudy, and then I noticed bits and peices of anemone "arms" or "tentacles" or whatever they are called lying about and small white chunks of its insides (?) lying around as well. I don't see any significant peices or big chunks of anything that appears to be the anemone. Looks like a bomb went off inside the thing. All water parameters were perfect (trites, trates, PH, Alk, ammonia, calcium) all great. Spent most of the evening doing about a 50 % water change. Changed all pads in the canister filter, and added carbon. Should this take care of most of the toxins/ poisons or are there more steps I should take?

Damn! Its not so hard to cover your powerheads guys...I get angry reading these post such a beautiful animal, and a dumb way to die please I repeat anyone who reads this PLEASE do researcg before owning such a beautiful animal. I think the prices on such a creature should be higher 200.00 than what sold so someone can think twice, and read more...

Anyway back to the thread. Remove any remaining pieces of the anemone and do water changes 15-20% water changes every 3 hours. Do this untill your water seems a bit better, run carbon, and hope for the best.

I guess a powerhead is a possibility, but it had never left its rock before. It would have been a long crawl (even though it's only a 38 gallon tank) it would have still had to crawl two feet across the tank and then about 14 inches up. Not saying it isn't possible, I just don't think it's probable.

Just did a quick inspection of the powerhead. it's a Maxi-Jet 900 and the screen on the intake is very fine. I really don't think it would have fit into the powerhead to go through it.

not trying to offend you or anything but sometimes what you may not think of a possibilty is really a huge problem with owning an bta

The anemone gets sucked through the screen like it's being juiced. They're just membrane filled with water. They can be sucked and blown out of pumps very easily even with a screen on.

Crawling isn't the only possibility. It might have started to move and come loose, thereby being propelled around the tank until it got sucked up in the powerhead.

Yup another one.
So sad.
My thread about this was pulled so thanks to pelochas for posting the link.
Another anemone could have been saved by just reading how to prevent this.
But a little thing like posting my web site url made them pull my thread.
How many will be lost to this powerhead tragedy before everyone takes action to prevent another loss???

And I have to add, this really brings tears to my eyes to see this happening over and over again.
Just breaks my heart to see that at least 10 have died in the last month from intake death.
When it is so easily prevented.
I am just so sad about all of this and don't know why I continue to read the anemone forum .

That sucks man, try to invert it and add some sponge to it.

I got a sponge cover for mine. I love it, except whenm I turn the power head off. all sorts of stuff falls from it.
